So anyone ever regret going from there 1st gen to there 3rd gen? I'm having a hard time giving up my 02 with a 140000 miles on it and getting into a 2018 OR. I've been offered 6000 trade in for it and 3600 off sticker on the 2018. Test drove and took it home but I'm having a hard time parting with my 02. I've tried both auto and stick, I currently have a manual. I've noticed the auto likes to shift a lot and also cabin isn't any quieter but other than that nothing really bad to put me off. And I don't want to have both.

This. Giving up the first isn’t an option. We can make fun of 2nd and 3rd gens but the fact is 1st fuckin kills

Well I went from 1st to 3rd Gen. Had a 2002 TRD OR Manual AC Limited and sold it 60% of MSRP after 12 years.

The road and cab noise, cramped cab, 190hp and a few other things like not dealing with frame issues are reasons I sold it.

Try selling it private party online, you’ll get top dollar especially if it’s a manual.

I had two 1st Gen's. Auto and Manual. Both were pristine when I sold them. Zero regrets going to 3rd. Didn't care for 2nd gen's. Skipped right over them to go straight to a 3rd. If I were rock crawling, I would regret giving up the 1st gens. I don't. 3rd gen rides smoother, just as capable for places I go, more interior room for kids and passengers, and much safer.

One thing I will say. 140k miles on a 1st gen should get you more than $6k.

Sold my A/T 2002 with 250k miles for a 2017 M/T and absolutely no regrets.

It’s a 15 year difference! Cmon the answer is simple

Yeah man. If that not an affordable option just keep saving. What I wouldn't do for a reliable 1st gen. If ain't broke.... KEEP IT.

    Neither number is enough.

Work your deal w/o a trade, sell yours yourself.

Its a shell and pea game. You have to remove 2 shells (trade, dealer financing) to know the true price of the pea (new vehicle)

As far as buying, it partially depends on 1) the real condition of your truck and 2) how you use a truck.

The 18 isn't any more truck, but it is bigger if you drive tight trails or city parking.

The 18 just smells good, has more gee whiz stuff, and empties your wallet.

If you are a cross country driver on a regular basis, newer will be more comfy and get some better mpg.

If you are a low annual miles, local drives, some off road, the old one is way cheaper.

I wish that I was smart enough to buy a 1st Gen instead of other cars along the way. We'd probably still have it and would have saved a lot of money along the way.

Your 1st Gen is still young considering the mileage. If you don't feel the absolute need to get the 2018, then wait it out until you do. Yours isn't going to depreciate any more.

My 3rd Gen is a keeper. I couldn't be happier with it.

This. I miss my first gen. The guy I sold it too just called me the other day and said with 267k on it the motor finally blew. I almost cried .

No big issues with my 02. New frame and suspension. Just the cab can get a little cramped sometimes.

I thought of the same thing in the past. All those cars I've had to where I ended up. Then again, if I hadn't scratched the itch then, I may still be yearning and wondering what it'd be like to own those cars. Money lost, for sure. But now I'm 100% satisfied with my current cars.

My "first" gen was a 1994 Access cab 4x4 in white. I put about 250K miles on that in about 12 years. At the end, she had a bad valve and it would have cost me at least $3000 to fix, as quoted by several local shops where I live. This was back in 2006. It might be more or less now, idk. I didnt have $3000 just laying around, so I sold the truck for $2500 and bought a new 2006.

I dont regret selling it, only because it was eventually going to cost me $$. I also always have been a Toyota fan boi, since like 1990ish. I have been really lucky I think, because all of my trucks have been mostly trouble free. Even the 2006, nothing major and it has 188K miles on it as of today. The only thing major I have replaced is the U joint, which really isn't that major.

I very much miss my first gen. Not because I hate the new one, but because it was just a great truck.
If it weren't for oppressive taxes (tags) and vehicle based rather than driver based insurance, I'd still own it.
