4.0L 1GR 2nd Gen Oil Change Guide

Thank you guys for the quick response, I have Toyota oem filters. I ended up buying Móvil 1 high mileage full synthetic.
I have a fumoto that never installed because I’m concerned about not having a magnet to collect the metal shavings.

A quart Gatorade bottle screws perfectly into the oil fill neck on the 4.0L and makes a great funnel.

 

Finished up my first oil change on the Taco. Dealer I bought it from freeking cranked the oil filter on so hard I had to stab it with a screw driver to get it off....errr (This is why I do my own maintenance, that and it can save you 100’s of thousands of dollars over a lifetime) glad I checked the forum because I had some tubing lying around and hooked it up to drain the filter. Greased my 5 driveshaft point as well. Been using mobile 1 full synthetic for the last 20 years, guess I’ll stick with it until it lets me down.

God I love my Taco!! All cleaned up too.

It amazes me how so few young males ( teenagers, early 20s) don’t know how to do an oil change. Must be the snowflake generation.

 

Because their fathers failed them. JK
But it goes back a few generation in most family's now days. Men aren't built the same. And most guys dont even own tools.

Its totally on the parents! 100%! My dad taught me how to turn a wrench as soon as i could walk. I've done the same with my 3 kids. I've had a tool kit, tire plug kit, and a set of jumper cables in every car I've owned over the last 20 years. There are people out there that cant even change their wiper blades.

I personally enjoy working on my stuff, I would much rather be in my garage than watching some stupid TV show. That and i cannot imagine paying Lube Hut $75 to change my oil.

BS. I have two younger sons who could care less about auto repairs. Has nothing to do with me failing them or how I raised them. Its just the “me” generation. My oldest son wrenches just like myself. Different generations.

Bought my Taco used. On my first oil change, I noticed the plastic cover that goes over the drain plug hole next to the oil filter is missing. I know to connect a drain hose or cup when I change the oil, but I am worried my wife or family will "help" me someday and take the Taco to a 10-minute oil change shop and they will remove the oil filter without knowing how to properly protect the engine from oil spill with that drain plug missing. Question-> What is the easiest cheapest replacement for this drain hole cover? It looks like a very cheap plastic cover that only costs .50 cents to make, but I bet the stealership will want $40 for it. Is there any type of DIY plug cover that is easily obtained to replace the OEM oil filter drain hole ?

 

Something I've been gonna do for a long time... Put a drain hose on to stay, exiting just below the frame. I've been using a soda pop bottle under the drain, but always concerned that it will fall off. Rather just put a container on the ground under a permanent drain hose.

 

now I remember why I never did it... The tube would continue to drip on my driveway.

 

Did another Mobile 1 5w30 oil change today. Tried the M1 empty bottle funnel instead of conventional funnel. It worked GREAT! Super easy.

 

Thanks for the good information. I am going to do my first oil change on the Taco in the next few days. My only question: aren't you supposed to fill the new oil filter before putting it back on? I noticed that was absent from the initial instructions at the beginning of this thread.
