Use whatever octane rating the manufacturer specifies.

YOU GET NOTHING IN TERMS OF HORSEPOWER, PERFORMANCE OR FUEL ECONOMY BY USING HIGHER OCTANE FUEL. PERIOD.

You might get different/better detergents, but that's it. Not worth it for frequent use.

You could use 87 Top Tier gas like the people who wrote the owner's manual say. Top Tier gas is just like other gas but with added detergents. But what would Toyota know?

 

I have an ‘06 V6 Tacoma and a 2017. Yes, higher octane definitely causes a noticeable change in the way both run. They both shift more predictively and MPG seems to be slightly better as well. That being said, some brands seem to be better for the ‘06. Like Shell 93. The 2017 seems to do well with 89 from Marathon. Those who disagree need to have their rear end aligned.

 

I find that my truck runs very poorly when it doesn't have gas in it, so I put gas in it and it runs much better

In case of apocalypse, I’m not giving you a ride! I hardly ever let it go below 1/3 or so, like to be able to drive to the next gas station. Its a 4-wheeling habit.

I swear the tank must be triangle shaped with a pointy end facing down - it just seems that the guage drops so much faster after it drops past 1/2 full!

 

They all do that, it's because of how the floats used to measure it the level work. You can fill the tank all the way to the top, but it won't actually register the level dropping until it's gone past the diameter of the float and the float actually starts to sink. That's why "full" can last for a few gallons.

 

it was engineered to run on regular unleaded. Thats all you need to know.

its not a high compression performance engine which would require higher octane.

 

My best friend works for a gas distributor. They sell to many different gas stations, big names too. It all comes from one main tank and they have additive stations that pour said additive for said gas station.
When was the last time you saw a Chevron gas truck, delivering to a Chevron ? You don't, if you ever see the Name brand gas trucks , they are bringing their additives to a distributor like my friend...

 

The higher octane rating for me has made only a slight difference in gas mileage but not enough to justify the price difference. Ethanol free gas however does give me better gas mileage but it also is much more expensive around here and doesn't seem worth the trouble. I have found though that name brand fuels seem to make my truck run smoother and I have noticed a slight increase in mpg.

 

87 octane will work fine in your truck. I would highly recommend purchasing your fuel from a "Top Tier" station.

A fuel cleaning additive once a year will do fine. Put it in the tank about 500 miles prior to your oil change. Make sure the cleaner contains PEA. Two very good fuel system cleaning products are Redline S-1 and Gumout All In One With Regane.

Is the manual octane rating taking into account your elevation? I know regular octane at sea level is 87, yet in Colorado it's 85. So when the manual says use at least 87, do I have to use mid grade in Colorado which is 88?

 

I have been running mid grade. I figured the manual would have stated an exception if it was the case. From what I have read the use 85 at high elevations was more applicable to carbed engines rather than modern EFI.
