Occasionally. It varies. I get to put abandoned mines to rest (restoration), fix roads, rip out trees etc.

Next week I'm going on a recon with the boss, the archaeologists and some tribal members to rebury some remains that resurfaced somewhere that they want "put to rest". We're going to find a spot in a local area that fits their requirements and I can get a piece of equipment to and set the date.

Actually I'm an underpaid jack of most trades but I guess the pay is commensurate with my attitude and ability to deal with the public when I have to or they do something really stupid that requires my attention.

Great! It was a bit sad to say goodbye to a few friends but it felt good to walk out that door for the last time. Stopped at HD, then the gas station, got home for lunch, ate, cut the lawn, had a bourbon - neat. Now relaxing in the recliner.

One guy quit today. Good tech. Young.
Got fed up with the shit we go through. Sick of being beat down.
Boss told him don’t worry about your time. I’ll cover it..
That’s a carrot you grab.. Nope not gonna do it.

    So he quit.

People don’t understand the tech transition.

    Techs don’t understand.

When you acquire the skill, you get the shit....
It’s not the gravy train with maga hours.

it takes the pressure off guys like me ......

I’ve done my share of motors and transmissions all my career.
For 5 years straight all I did was motors and transmissions.
Had extra benches around my area.
No one was allowed around me or to bother me.
    Boss paid my time overage.
    I did my job.
I can honestly say that in my entire career, I have never had a motor, transmission, rear end, come back with a problem.....

I deserve a break and slow down.
And I have and they have let me.
But these kids have to pick it up..

    It’s the way it is....

It's being looked at. Could be theft or it could be insurance fraud. Lots of people who don't want them anymore take them out, thrash/crash/set fire and quite a few are stolen and abandoned. This one can go either way from what I can see.

On the removal point, it's looked at different ways from different divisions. The wilderness and recreation folks see it as blight and a hazard. Law enforcement sees it as a case of fraud, theft and abandonment on public lands, biologist sees it as hazmat and a threat to species and possibly contaminating a water run off. Kinda funny how it all works out. If whomever is at fault gets caught they can be prosecuted as well as pay restitution and, quite possibly be ordered to pay "cost recovery"....my time, loader time, my truck time, wrecker fees, anyone who was involved with assisting me, their vehicle time, any environmental damaged caused by leaking fluids, biologist's time, archaeologist's time. It can get pretty involved and very expensive.

It seems these younger folks don't want to put in their time. Some of the interns we get want to finish their internship and be the boss. No field work, no case work, no project work. They think their internship was "putting in time"...they don't even know how the fucking system works and they think they own it.

    It’s really sad.

But in reality he had about 30 years of heavy work crap to go...

    It’s relentless..

There's quite a few of us in informal "lead" positions that got there by putting in time, experience in many diverse cases, seeing and troubleshooting stuff many times others have only heard of. There are many bright young people out there who have plenty of potential but you can only get here through time and exposure.

But, a person with the credentials and experience that can set bear traps and hob-knob can go as far as they want faster than those who can't. Personally, I like having (as much) fun at work (as I can) and not putting up or dealing with the politics of higher positions. Been there, done that.

Skinning those little bastages is a PITA. Then putting them over the stretchers and fleshing them is a lot of work for little gain.

Good thing where I work at is had decide to go either management or technical years ago. Duh I spent 20 years baby sitting in the Navy what do you think!? Now they have changed it so that if your into leadership you are split into either Resource Manager or Technical Manager. But we still have Technical Specialist, and pay is the same as Management. Have gone as far as I can without getting a Masters. And no desire to, hell I would be retired by the time I completed it. And the money isn't that much more. Plus I don't spend all day in meetings, but more time than I would like to already. So I am OK with being the technical specialist. Life is good. One foot in front of the other.
