I plan on spending a couple of weeks camping and exploring in Utah in October. I’ve heard Goblin valley is a neat place. I’ve looked at the campsite reservations and they are booked solid. Does anyone know of any free camping around there? Thanks

There's tons of free camping all around Goblin Valley. Wild Horse Road, Temple Mountain Road. Drive for a 5 minutes around there and you'll find all sorts of open camping.

After you've had your hot shower and other amenities available at Goblin Valley State Park, and if you want something a bit more isolated and certainly away from other folks, you might want to consider the Henry Mountains to the south. I've been going there twice a year since 1991 and it's still relatively untouched. The dirt roads are well maintained but you'll probably need 4WD for a couple of places. And Bull Creek Pass (10,000 feet+) is generally closed by snow on both sides until the first part of July.

I think you can still access a write-up that I did several years ago and posted on the internet...

Camp anywhere you like.....the BLM will prefer you camp where there is

already a fire ring....exit #131 on I-70 will get you there...or off of Hwy 24.......

October is a fine time to be there.....as mentioned..take a drive to the Henry Mtns....

One of Utah's trophy buck deer units........along with 450+ free roaming Bison..

Anyone camping in & around Goblin Valley today....may end up with 6" of fresh snow on the ground

Goblin Valley was amazing last October. I stayed in the CG at the park. Keep checking and sooner or later a spot will open up. Also check for single nights and not concurrent nights. That said the camp wasn't anything special. The bathrooms and showers look like they were taken out of a circa 1950 High school locker room before it was demolished. The sites are tight together and no trees or anything so no privacy. The people running the park were a little off too. I called ahead and asked if they still had firewood available and they said yes. When I showed up they had sold out. I asked why they didn't tell me they were running low when I called and when they would be getting more and they said maybe in a week. Later that night someone else in camp drove out to the office and back with firewood. I was so pissed. Apparently they did get more in. Not sure why they had lied to me. If it wasn't for the RTT I would have gone back to the office and bitched them out.
The Valley itself is cool and the best part is you can wander around anywhere you want, no trails.
There is a bunch of BLM land just north of the park that you can camp on too. Just keep in mind that you'll be paying the day use fee for the park if you don't camp there in the park.

Just got back from our first trip to Utah, and I’m glad we hit Goblin Valley. Campsite was good except I had the wrong spot for a RTT. (Made it work). One of spots we liked the best out of our whole trip was hiking the slot canyon at Little Wild Horse Canyon.
