Thanks for the write-up. I decided to replace my clutch sooner rather than later. Now as opposed to February when it is 20 degrees and a foot of snow. I ordered the OEM Toyota clutch and the "B" version disk and pressure plate. I received an e-mail back from the parts folks saying that I had to be certain that is the clutch that I have as they are not interchangeable.

Does anyone know anything about this for certain? From what I've read here LUK's were replaced with Aisins. They said they sent diagrams but they were not attached. Mine is an '08 built prior to January '08. Base model everything, currently at 76,000 miles and change. Thanks!

I installed the Aisin CKT-065 on my 2TR-FE R155 and couldn't be happier, night and day difference. I discovered that I did in fact have a LUK clutch installed before. The Aisin CKT-065 came with Koyo replacement bearings. Currently $153 on Amazon

Great article. Just wondering what is the average miles the 2nd gen gets on a clutch. My 93 only went through 4 so far. Someone told me they burn them up faster. I think it was just him though. Where does one find the short shifter mod. Thought it already is extra short. No more playing bloody knuckles with the Dash like my 93, or acidently changing radio stations. Just picked up on 08 with a 6sp. Hard getting used to the extra gear.

Not sure of the average miles others are getting but I currently have 225,000 on the original clutch. My commute is mostly stop and go highway driving ~ 150miles/day

Green Harbor to Billerica, ~75mi each way. You likely already know how Rt. 3 and Rt. 128 can be during the morning/afternoon commute. I am on the road 05:45 just to minimize the stop part of the stop and go.

That’s a lot of driving. Rt128 sucks and they need to hurry up with the work on rt3

I was working up in Lincoln and Waltham last year and it would be close to 3 hours on my way home with that roadwork on 128. This was pre roadwork on rt3

Rt 128 Waltham construction. Ughh. Three times this year I was rear ended and pushed into the vehicle in front while stopped on the highway in that section, each time the person that hit me was on the GD phone.

I guess that is one way to ensure your headlights are never cloudy.

I used this write up to do my clutch recently. Thank you to OP as this was truly a saving grace as this was my first time and I was doing it by myself.

One suggestion I wanted to add to maybe help others. When I was attempting to get the transmission back up in (balancing it on 2 jacks) which was nearly impossible. To not get my face crushed in, I put 2 ratchet straps around the frame rails and ran them under the transmission, one up near the front and one in the back at the transfer case. This helped support the weight and keeps it from falling off the jacks as easy. It also gave me the added protection in case it did fall off the jack. It allowed me to jimmy the transmission back into place a little easier then jacks alone.. Obviously a proper trans jack would have probably solved this issue but the average DIY may not have one.. Just figured id share..

Officially at 239,000 now and still going. :) Now I am on a quest to see how far I can go.

Reminds me of a Seinfeld episode where Kramer wanted to see how far the car could go with the gas tank reading E.

I also recently replaced with the Aisin CKT 065 from Amazon. The previous clutch was trash and shimmied like crazy when it was cold, it was almost undriveable. Based on everything I read I was expecting to pull a LUK out but the old clutch was also an Aisin, albeit what appeared to be a slightly different design, and looked like it was original based on wear (175k).

That said the new CKT 65 made a night and day difference, I'm so much happier driving my truck now.

With two people who pretty much know what they're doing I was able to use just one floor jack to lift the transmission into place without much trouble, just have one person manning the jack handle, other person balancing it, and make sure you have the jack right under the COG of the tranny to make life easy. Trick is once you have the input shaft lined up the jack man needs to do a wheelie with the jack and then pull the handle towards the rear of the truck to pivot the jack on it's rear wheels causing the front of the jack to move towards the front of the truck allowing you to get the shaft into the pilot bearing and seat the dowel pins. Then quickly thread in a couple bellhousing bolts, toss the cross member on ASAP to support the weight. Then you can relax, get the jack out of the way, and bolt the rest up at your leisure.

Finally had my original clutch replaced yesterday after 256,000 trouble free miles. Mechanic said I got my money's worth out of it as the rivets were almost flush with the friction pad material that was left. I pushed it as far as I felt comfortable as it was grabbing at the very last inch or so of the peddle travel and I knew it would go at the worst possible time this winter.

The flywheel did not need to be replaced saving me ~$300, no sign of heating and the contact surface was in "remarkably good condition".

The original clutch was a Luk and it was replaced with a Luk clutch pack kit (1116088) purchased at a NAPA store. Total cost including labor was $873.
