Looking for a cheap fix

Ok so i got a car for free for a friend. Guy just told me if i could get it out of his yard i could have it, so i just hooked it up to the back of my Taco and brought it home. I changed all the fluids, cleaned it up, and replaced the fuel filter and got it running again. On the exterior where some of the paint has peeled there is a bit of surface rust. In a attempt to hinder the surface rust i am looking for a solution. I need something cheap and i do not have access to a sandblaster, so i was wondering if using some sand paper to try and remove a good bit of it and then using touch up spray paint to keep more from building over time. Any comments or suggestions?

From the sounds of it, it doesn't sound like the paint job on it is worth saving and/or you dont care about the paint job on it, so I'd just remove all the rust via sandpaper, wheel, whatever, and then slap on some Rustoleum primer and if you really wanted, a top coat of the same color (or close).

oh yea i really could care less about the paint job i just want to stop the rust from getting too much worse. Its not a amazing car but i do want to get it into somewhat presentable shape. For a car i got for free with brand new tires on it i already think i am coming out ahead and kinda want to keep the input of cash on this car low since i am just letting a friend use it until he can get on his feet.

 

bondo! lol nah nah...u could sand and primer if your willing too...

 

Just sand it a bit and spray it with some of that shit that turns rust back to metal and primes it all at same time.
