Anyone recognize this trucking company??

Most insurance policies are written to prohibit you from claiming diminished value on your own policy. No problem if another claiming against an at fault insurer.. On that truck, and estimated damage, probably looking at less than $500. There is a formula you can google.

There are plate readers everywhere constantly capturing plate data.

 

Any movement overnight on this? I was sure by now TWI would have this case wrapped up.

@jemptt15 All you should have to do is give your insurance company the license plate number and they should be able to run the plate themselves.

I know this because i parked my recently purchased (at that time) convertible at an airport parking lot once before and when i arrived back from my return flight i discovered someone with a giant Trailblazer drove the front end of their SUV right into the front end of my convertible and parked it like that. I purposely parked my convertible about 4 ft back from the front of the parking spot line so this person came way over the line and into my spot to cause the front end damage. Considering it was 1am when i discovered it like this, i took a bunch of close up pictures, pictures with both of our vehicles and their license plate, and various others to capture it all. I called my insurance company to report it and sent them all the photos. Ultimately, they were able to get a hold of the person who owned the vehicle. At first, she lied and said she didn't cause the damage. But, of course, i had picture evidence whereas all she had was her lying words.

Years ago I was driving by a neighborhood swim/tennis parking lot and saw an SUV back into a parked car in the lot before taking off. I was able to get the tag and vehicle description, then went back and left a note on the car with the info and my contact info as well. (didn't have time to walk around to the other side of the complex to find whomever was playing tennis)

Three weeks later or so I got a call from the guy whose car was hit; the info I gave allowed the sheriff to find the teen driving the SUV and teen's parents were making things right.

So sometimes it does work out, even if not always.

They're required to have their information on the side of all their commercial motor vehicles. Hopefully there's not a next time but...take a picture of the DOT number on the side of the truck. It's the best way to track them down since the trailer may or may not be theirs.

 

Similar story. Out on a date, get rear-ended at a stoplight by a drunk who ran immediately. He left his license plate at the scene and the police and my insurance used that to track him down and eventually get his insurance to repair my car.

 

Maybe some time in the past, insurance companies would reward this type of loyalty. As you found out, that's not the case any more. I have an agent that represents multiple insurance companies, and every time I add/remove a vehicle, or every couple of years, we go over my insurance needs and they shop around to find the best deal. If the insurance company isn't going to reward loyalty, they won't get it.

 

You would be wrong. Many LEOs have Automated License Plate Readers (ALPR) attached to their vehicles and run every license plate that comes into it's view. They will tell you, "It's to find vehicles that were reported stolen", and "The vehicle is out in public, so there is no expectation of privacy". The reality is the data goes into a database, that is then aggregated with other databases from other jurisdictions. There is no regulation of that data, so what's really happening is creation of a log with the timestamped location of any vehicle that comes into the ALPR view.

Some specific misuses of this system include (from the above link, there are plenty more) Police officers in New York drove down a street and electronically recorded the license plate numbers of everyone parked near a mosque. In 1998, a Washington, D.C. police officer “pleaded guilty to extortion after looking up the plates of vehicles near a gay bar and blackmailing the vehicle owners.” In 2009, San Francisco police pulled over Denise Green, an African-American city worker, handcuffed her at gunpoint, forced her to her knees, and searched both her and her vehicle—all because her car was misidentified as stolen due to a license plate reader error.

 

So hit and run is not a crime?

Hate to hijack but this is kind of relevant as the police don't seem to want to run plates in this case. Maybe they think the case is flimsy or they just don't want to be in the middle of a case where they didn't witness anything.
It's my understanding the auto. readers gets them around the 'profiling' human aspect of 'just running plates' making it legal. As demonstrated above, it can be misused.
