I may get banned for this, but downtown Oklahoma city had a very bad white flight epidemic in the 50s and 60s, then the bombing in the 90s, it never really recovered. It is predominantly black and crime rate is not ideal. The suburbs to the north are nice, and even further out of town to the north east you get into small horse farms.

Edmond is expensive (and traffic-heavy). Is living in Edmond a must? The housing market is exploding, so you'll have your choice of older and newer houses as you like, where you like. Edmond has a bit of a rep as a "snooty" whitebread middle-class area, earned or not I couldn't say personally.

From my personal experience, avoid the South/Southwest side of the city, as well as Midwest City and Del City pretty much as a whole. Unless you enjoy high crime areas.

I just moved out to the Mustang/Yukon area last year from the Southside and I enjoy the smaller town/country-lite aspect, while still having the city be readily accessible. I can get to Tinker (East side of the city) in ~25 minutes. Choctaw is also outside the main city while still being close.

But I'd say having a tornado shelter be at the top of your short list.

Racial undertones aside, there has been a massive resurrection and gentrification for much of the city in the last 10 or so years. Midtown, paseo, plaza, deep deuce, and many other districts are all very nice with new construction basically constant through many parts of the city. The city has made a huge turnaround since the economic bust of the 80's, including tourist and cultural centers like Bricktown and the Boathouse district.

living in Edmond is not a must, my new job is located there by 77 so if i can hit 35 quickly it will probably be faster than driving through Edmond. i see from my online shopping i can get a lake house on lake hefner cheaper than going 5 min north into Edmond and was wondering why it is such a drastic difference. I prefer newer construction 2000 and up just because i would have less anticipated problems in he near future. school zone is also a factor as i have 3 and a 6 years old.

Just cosmetic: Window Tint, radio knobs, temp control knobs, Tech-Deck, Tonneau bed cover, tail gate lock, de-chromed all badges inside and out, installed back up camera and custom bedside decals.

I live on the southwest side....depends on the area you are talking about...I'm south of 119th and to me, it's a nice area, nice (newer) neighborhoods, lots of new businesses are popping up, minutes from moore/norman and the tri-city. I've lived on the north side, and i've always preferred the south side. You couldn't pay me enough to live in Edmond...that traffic blows.

If i was gonna have to move to the Edmond area, Id move to Guthrie. Smaller town, good schools from what ive heard, and 20 min from Edmond.

I have lived in inner-city OKC, Mustang, Piedmont, and FAR North Edmond. I bought a house near NW 36th and MacArthur 6 years ago, and I will never recommend someone pick Edmond. OKC Metro is where it's at. And a Lake House near Lake Hefner sounds immensely preferable to anything in Edmond. You may not find >2000 construction, but there are great houses and neighborhoods in that area.

Obviously just my own opinion, but why choose some cookie-cutter, urban-flight, tree-less property than something in our well-established Metro? Also, newer construction doesn't necessarily mean no issues. Lots of builders only care about putting up as many houses as close together and as quickly as possible. I don't know why everyone defaults to Yukon, Moore, Edmond, unless you just really love strip malls and churches I guess.

That's the end of my rant. I hope you find something you that suits you perfectly!

If you're doing public schools, don't pick OKC schools. They just closed a bunch of schools and moved more kids into already overcrowded schools. Edmond and Deer Creek schools are supposed to be the best. If you're ok with private schools, there are a lot to choose from, but most are expensive.

U guys are late, that was over a year ago! I had 2 days to come up check out the area and buy a house, had never been to OKC before that. Ended up in south edmond right by my work. I think I did ok love it there, close proximity to everything, good school! Now just trying to find me a good spot to hunt! Lexington is not my type, lake thunderbird got few nice spots but gets overcrowded and parking spots are limited.
