So I think I’ve found the solution to the elusive missing title issue on my 1998 5-Lug. There’s this loophole I found out in which you register the vehicle in the State of Virginia (you don’t have to be a resident) and after you get the plates and registration from the Virginia DMV, you bring it to your respective state’s DMV (in my case the California DMV) and obtain a title by transferring the registration over to California.

It’s about $100. I’m going to try it. All the comments in the video have shown mostly success.

You cant just call up the old owner and get the paperwork to recover a lost title?

People do basically that through the state of Nevada to clean title status. Have a salvage or rebuilt title, no prob, title in Nevada on a rez, then bring it to the state you want and it is magically back to clean. Nevada doesn't retain history for whatever reason, shady auction people wash them through that's state all the time.

It goes back three owners who have never had the truck registered in their name. I tried finding the original owner, I even did a background check on a parking ticket I found but the last registered owner moved three times and fell off the face of the planet.

I give up trying to do this the California way. I’m doing this the Vermont way. Wish me luck I’m filling out the application right now.

It’s going to be strange having a truck with Virginia plates on it in California.

You can get the previous owners info unless you're police and they cannot give it out.

Yeah I have the PDFs for the cruisers wiring, a442f transmission, and the general FSM, same for the taco minus the trans. But I like to have the little handbook in the trucks for quick reference and on the go repair. Plus it is a damn good reprint.

My friends father is the police chief of the neighboring city - he has access to the CHP database. I asked him for the last registered owner’s info and he told me it’s against the law without a warrant. He could, however, tell me if it was stolen or not.

    It wasn’t. So that’s good.

Do you know what it was last registered as, like non op, i think non op makes it easier to get a title for if you lost one. But that might be for really old cars. I had a buddy with a old bug and he did something like that

Thanks man, my gf's 4runner has a vent (drivers side of the center two) that has a broken swivel stud so it just flops down and shoots all the air at the shifter. Really sucks since AZ is starting heating up

The guy I bought it from told me his cousin drove it until the tags expired, so it was registered. The tags expired in 2017.

Yeah your beat bet is Virginia, ik in states with more relaxed titile laws there are companies that “buy your car” registere it there then send you the pink slip so you can register it in your state.

I'm doing it. I already wrote a check to the State of Virginia.

I have to much effort invested into this stupid truck.

You should just slam it and make a drift truck, see if street taco still makes its bolt on 4link for 5lugs lol

That's the plan. I already bought a roll pan for it.

I really like the look of the 4Runner front end on the 5-lugs when it's slammed. I hate that stupid tire camber though.

You dont need to lower it that far lol. Nice 3/4 drop with some good rims. Maybe do the qa1 coil over conversion. Only problem with a 4” drop in the rear is you have about 2” of travel so you would need to c notch it
