My wife and I just bought a 2018 Tacoma. I have been looking at a bunch of threads on here and came across the mod for the AC condenser hose. I started looking up under the front and noticed surface rust on a few places that appear to have never been painted/treated. I am not an overly mechanical person and thought I would seek advice on her. So a few questions.

    1. Is this something I should worry about?
    2. If so, is it even worth bringing up with the dealer.
    3. Can I or should I just use the anti rust paint. I don't want to paint something I shouldn't.
    4. Any other suggestions or recommendations.

Any areas that do not have paint will be subject to rust, every time I rotate my tires I clean up and paint any areas that have surface rust.

Do you use any particular paint? I have come across the stuff at ace that I believe is called rust proof. Also I noticed rust forming on the threads of protruding bolts. I'm not sure if it is a good idea to paint those or if I should just try to scrape them clean with a wire brush.

Those spots on the spindles bothered me, so I hit them with a wire wheel and painted them.

Also, it was said that the frame paint / waxy stuff, doesn't seem to stick to the weld material. When the paint flakes off, it looks like the welds are rusty, but that is just the color of it.

I usually just grab whatever black spray paint I happen to have in the garage at that time. Been doing this since my 1st Gen and never had any rust issues.

I seen a few threads where people had some issues. I take pretty good care of the truck and bought the Toyota silk protectors just to keep any scratches at bay, was going to clean the truck the other day and noticed rust there at the edge of the protector. Obviously salt can get in there but it should rust like that. Never had an issue on any other vehicle I owned including any other Toyota’s. My F150 I bought sill protectors and cleaned less, and never had an issue. They must be using cheap Chinese metal. Freaking garbage. I’d be more pissed but I plan to get rid of it within 2 years so hopefully it just doesn’t get worse

Once rust like this starts on the thin body sheet metal , unless you remove it and protect it /neutralize it , it will get worse . It does no stop on it's own .

I really dislike the fact that the upper control arms are just bent metal. I plan to replace those mainly for peace of mind when I redo my front stock suspension.

Agreed that it's bull that in 2018 this stuff is still a problem. Things rusted like mad in the 1970s but by the 1990s everyone had a pretty good idea how to clean, galvanize, prime and paint to minimize it. It's like we've regressed and my $0.02 is because bean counters realized that thinner and cheaper metal and paint costs less upfront and brings forward when you have to replace the truck. If Toyota had kept on the continuous improvement path they were they'd be building trucks that last 50 years now and would have gone out of business.

But about sill protectors. My feeling is those are like undercoating and bedliners typically ineffective and just cover up the rust, letting it just chew up your metal underneath. So it's better to see the flaws and fix the rust early. I once peeled back a spray-in bedliner from the floor of a truck and a chunk of rust came with it.

I know. I’ll probably have to sand it down and touch it up

I picked up a brand new 18 with 4 miles on it yesterday. It already had rust on the rear drum.... :/
