The problem is that these 3.5 don't have torque.

Totally agree. I bought my truck to be a suburban hauler knowing that limitation. Can’t make a pack mule into a thoroughbred. Maybe I’ll try to pick up a 2nd vehicle like a older LandCruiser or a full size diesel to scratch that itch.

The Tacoma is a thoroughbred that I wish would act like a pack mule...

lugging a motor at 2k rpms with high load is just inefficient and puts a high mechanical strain on everything. Not sure why folks are so caught up on not having the transmission downshift when necessary. I'd rather the truck shift down when needed but as soon as the load lessens, go right back down. Yes it's a jump in rpms but why does that bother everyone so much as long as you're maintaining speed?

I've had it where the truck drops to 4th to maintain but only after having to go 50% throttle, and by then the mapping is so different the truck thinks i need to go really fast.

Hence my issues with the throttle tables in each gear not being the same.

This.. Running 1.03 yes it did hold 5th and 6th on the highway more for sure and shifted a bit less, but if you look at your manifold pressure / calculated load on a OBD2 device you'll see when it's holding at times you're at a very high load vs. the downshift to higher RPMs to push a shorter gear = much less load on the engine. so long as it shifts when I want it to and is snappy in response as it is with 1.04 I'm fine with some shifting on the highway. my overall MPGs are still better with 1.04 than 1.03 even with bit more shifting on the highway.

the problem I had was that when I'd push the pedal down the delay to downshift was so horrible (and you're losing speed when this is happening) on a hill then by the time it did downshift you were high in the throttle and jerking into 4th roughly. this doesn't happen with the tune

I do have this happen with 1.04.

Example: crusing at 70 mph flat, 6th gear. hit grade. vehicles slows based on given throttle (say 5%). so I push on the pedal more, say 10%, finally it kicks down to 5th, but too late, i've lost momentum, at this point i've slowed to 65 or less. also continuing to give it more throttle, now at 15-20% if not more, now the truck thinks based on load and throttle that i really want to get moving so it kicks to 4th and i accelerate back to 70 but by the time that happens, i'm having to lift as i don't want to go over 70. really, the truck should shift to 5th any time there's a torque request that is anything but flat road cruising. that's all 6th is good for. sometimes i drive in s5 just to avoid it shifting to 6th.

to me, this feels like inconsistent throttle mapping in each gear. i say feels like because i don't know if that's actually the case.

holding a gear at high load and low rpm is just something this engine can't do.

if i'm bored i might go back to stock tune just to see how the truck behaves in this same exact circumstance and give it a few hundred miles to 'learn'. i didn't do that previously for enough time for a good comparison.

Yeah a few members. I believe everyone with the ssp tossed it abd stuck with tune. Pointless to have both since matt is offering custom shift points/tunes

Anyone having luck installing this new tune without the dongle? Gotta admit, reading through the instruction pdf from the OVTune website has left me a little confused. Partly because I'm a Mac guy (got a Windows 10 loaded PC through Amazon for $200 that I haven't yet unwrapped) and partly because he hasn't written any new "no dongle" instructions. Still have 12 hours left of my 24 hour shift so I'll be starting from scratch when I get home in the morning. Hoping others who just received their kits chime in!

So just now getting around to setting the Tune up - I'm getting the "USB dongle is not accessible" error - what did I mess up and what do I need to do to get the "dongle serial number"?

My computer sees the Guardant Code USB and I can open the properties so I know it is accessible...

    Any help is appreciated!
