I have a question for my fellow cat aficionados. So our new cat is adorable and is likely the sweetest cat I’ve ever met. He lived on the streets of Cleveland for a while before he got picked up and eventually rescued home to us. He is our only cat and he has outstanding manners with scratching and the litter box. My question is why he yells ALL THE TIME. I mean our last cat meowed some but this guy talks all day long. It is especially loud right after he eats his food. I didn’t know if it was some sort of call after eating or what, but he gets exceptionally loud. It’s hilarious and adorable except when it’s 4:30 am and he goes on a bender. So we are just wondering if there is a behavioral reason behind it or he just likes to talk and yell.

    The culprit: Danny Greene

I’ve been around cats all my life, in the city, on the farm, rescuing directly off the street, breeder, etc. Remember, he’s a street cat. My best guess from experience is that he’s just vocalizing his happinesses. The cat I rescued directly off the street was kinda like this, just not in the early morning because he enjoyed cuddling with me on the bed when it was dark ( I think he was actually afraid of being alone ). When your cat is vocalizing like that, engage in conversation by meowing back. I think you’ll find that he’ll answer back and actually like it and find it entertaining at the same time.

Thanks for the reply! We have been around cats too but never one this vocal so I was curious to hear others experiences with this. He definitely seems happy as a clam and is much more clingy and people centered than our other cats ever were. We love to talk back to him and if we pet him while we are talking he really gets fired up. It is quite entertaining so long as we are awake lol.

Few things annoy me more than the family yelling ‘SHUT UP’ at the cat over and over again. First, he doesn’t listen. Second, the noise they’re making is more annoying than the noise he makes.

I just tell him he’s ugly and nobody likes him in the sweetest voice possible and he purrs his stupid little brains out at me.

you can get them to tone it down, just make a sppppT sound rather than yelling at it to shut up...lol

Probably not the case but how is his hearing? We had a cat who was not able to hear and he was overly vocal and extremely loud. We rescued him and then discovered some idiot didn’t get his ear infection treated which led to him being deaf.

Our little guy LOVES to talk to us. He drives Rosie nuts though sometimes because he likes to yak at her early in the AM. When I'm there as soon as I get in the house he jogs up the hallway and greets me with a bunch of meows and myakks and we'll go sit on the front stairs and he'll watch the birds, then turn and look up at me and say something and my stock reply is "yeah!"
This cat understands stuff too like "c'mon let's go see mama!" when he hears that he'll head on up the stairs:) Or "go eat yer food!" he knows to head right for his bowls. Cats are pretty damn clever like that when they can associate certain inflections in your speech to certain things enough times-you wind up actually having a neat rapport between animal and human.

We have had him examined by our highly trusted vet and he is healthy. He seems to hear just fine. Whenever I open a new can of food he comes running from wherever he is as soon as the sound of the can starts. It’s a good thought but as I’ve seen a couple other posts he might just be a talker, I’ve just never seen one his loud.

He definitely has learned certain sounds and certain words. The sound of a can of food opening brings him sprinting into the kitchen yelling and when we say “dinner” he runs to his bowls. We have also taught him how to sit, as good as a cat takes directions. So he knows words for sure. He can just get really loud when he starts talking, louder than any cat I’ve ever heard.

its interesting this stray cat "Miss kitty" shes quite vocal, not loud per se but I shake the food dish and she comes running...meowing all the way. She also likes an audience when shes eating, maybe its to watch her back or something but I have food out during the day and she doesnt really eat, I shake the dish and she comes running eats some and purrs. I think shes adjusting to her new domain...

You could try spritzing him with a water pistol when he does it at night. My current cat had the habit of crying at his food bowl at 3am for a while. We got sick of it and started getting up and spraying him when he'd cry while we were still in bed. Took about a week, but he got the point and it's a non-issue now. Instead he'll just hop up onto the bed and wait for us to wake up. But, as soon as we're up, we'd better be going to fill his bowl.

A compressed air can like one of those you use the get dust out of computers is a better option. They hate the sound and it's not as mean or messy. Just DON'T POINT IT DIRECTORY AT THEM. We used one of these once to get a cat to stop scratching at the bedroom door and now we can put any aerosol can next to no-go areas and they all keep clear.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B0721735K9/ref=cm_cr_arp_mb_bdcrb_top?ie=UTF8

There are several brands available, and they sell refills. After the first one we just kept an air duster hand. One blast up in the air clears the room.

Tried it. He gave zero f*cks. This cat is pretty bulletproof for noise; he sleeps through the vacuum and when I was running the pneumatic nailer in the workshop he just chilled out underneath my table saw with his ears backwards and blinked whenever I pulled the trigger. But he hates being wet.

So we have had Amos with us for a month now. He’s growing like a weed but he’s just miserable and always on edge living here, as you can tell by the picture. We absolutely love this little guy and the girls have become much more tolerant of him and we see them wrestling and chasing each other.

Damn! I missed 6 pages in the week I was out of town (Punta Cana). I tried to "like" as many pictures as I could when scrolling through.

Abigail did well at the boarding place. We picked her up yesterday afternoon. She did the same thing there with peeing outside the box... The vet said with her being 15-16 years old she's just set in her ways. She doesn't believe it's anything health related since nothing besides hyperthyroidism is showing on her tests.

A co-worker who takes her dog to the same place (for the vet part) stopped by twice while I was away to check on Abigail. She sent me a picture via Facebook Messenger (I'll post it later - phone is charging in the other room).

I didn't miss changing the pee-pads (3 have needed to be changed since she got home around 2pm yesterday) or her 5am wake up alarm.... :frusty:

But my wife and I definitely felt at peace (right word?) with leaving her at the Animal Care Center & Pet Resort while we were away. We didn't want to come home to our house being all messed up (piss everywhere was the main concern) and having the burden a family member to take care of her.

    That's the update! :)
