Wahoo! more Northeast'ish people getting on the HAM wagon. So much better then CB.

If any of you are looking into a full mobile setup I would definitely recommend the Yaesu 100dr. It opens up alot of possibilities including APRS location stuff. Is it the best at any of it... No... but its $300 and comes with everything you need besides the antenna, antenna mount and coax.... but even a BaoFeng handheld inside the truck will match or even out range a nice CB setup...

The 400 looks nice too. Just not too sure how much I'd personally use the digital side.

I wonder if you can layer the aprs with the Backcountry AP...

The short answer from my research is if you really want to get into APRS skip the 400 and go straight to the Kenwood D710g. And I believe APRS does integrate with Backcountry Navigator...but it does not with GAIA GPS. To sum things up quicky, Yeasu's software allows export of APRS data...but not import... so you can potentially (I haven't done it... and have been meaning to try it) export APRS data to a droid operating system phone or tablet... BUT... you cannot upload... So using APRS droid you cannot type a message on your droid tablet or phone and upload it to your radio on a Yeasu radio. BUT with the Kenwood D710g (or a V71 and a Mobilink) you can connect the radio to your droid tablet or phone and have 2 way communication between the droid device and radio. This comes in handy if you plan to send "text" messages from your radio to a cell phone or email--- which you can do! and I have done from my 100dr.

If I were to buy another radio I would get the Kenwood D710g... but its twice the price (atleast) of the Yaesu 100dr. The Yaesu however comes with all the mounting brackets and cords needed to mount the radio body under your seat and the head somewhere else (I used a scan gauge mount to put it above the rearview mirror) where as the Kenwood you need to buy a bracket and cords that add another ~$100+ to the purchase price...

As for the digital side, Ive never used it (comes with the 100dr as well). Unfortunately the HAM community is not on the same page, so on the digital side you can't talk between different radio companies (ie Yaesu to Kenwood or ICOM on Digital doesnt work--- analog works fine though)

To me the most interesting thing of APRS is the ability to share my location and send SMS text messages if I am out of cell range. While this wont work everywhere there is a surprising amount of APRS coverage where you may not have cell service - including places like the Green Mountain National Forest in VT. For some interesting digging and good in on APRS SMS text messages check out http://smsgte.wixsite.com/smsgte - pretty cool to potentially be able to text your buddy your exact coordinates if he is coming into camp late or text your wife to let her know your alive... or need help... or whatever.

That's what I'm currious about. I know there's a few icom repeaters up this way. But there seems to be more and more fusion ones popping up as well.

For me the point of digital is the same as me learning cw. Less bandwidth and more punch when I'm in the middle of no where and need a comms safety net.

The problem with digital as I understand is it is good until its not. So digital will be clearer further out then analog, but as soon as you cross that threshold digital dies off completely where analog you will come in... just choppy.

For a true safety net you need to go HF cause you can literally talk to people on the other side of the globe... but the US seems to have pretty good repeater coverage on 2m/70cm which are the main bands as far as I understand. If you can hit a repeater then you should be able to get some help. There are a couple stories on TW here of guys out west hitting repeaters and relaying info through other hams to make a phone call home to get help or using APRS to send GPS coordinates and messages to members to get help when in the middle of nowhere out west.

Ok so I was able to do the camping for cheap but at least one of the things I want to do on Saturday has an entrance fee.

It's $16 per adult, $14 kids 6-12 and free for kids under 6.

I just wanted to give everyone a heads up.
