Got my beach driving pass and the truck has all the important stuff already loaded (fishing gear) for this weekend. Seems like Hatteras is the place to be but with the weather I'll probably stick with Oregon inlet. Got the cast net and bait bucket too, hopefully I can catch some fresh mullet. Should be out there the better part of Saturday and possibly Sunday!

I have an opportunity to get two Penn 330 GTI's for cheap cheap, ya'll think those are overkill for surf fishing? Might have to modify it to get ride of the level wind.

That's my only concern is they would have to be dedicated boat rods, which I don't necessarily need that class of reel on my kayak. Whats casting far? I'd be content with 50-75 yards...I have an old eagle claw reel thats a conventional level wind and I get about 70 yards with it slinging 4-5 oz of weight. I'm in the process of getting both reels and two 6 foot boat rods for $70. All in excellent shape.

I do throw a penn 209 pretty decent. The price just seems too good to pass up. Even if they don't work out, I feel like I could keep one and sell the other about breaking even.

 You convinced me even though it might not work... If I get them, I'll buy one 12 footer and if I can cast it this weekend then I'll get the second rod

There goes my window tinting budget :smack:

Well I got the Penn 330 gti's at $40 each, the line was shot on them so I spooled each with 350 yards of 30lb mono. The rods are nice boat rods with a roller for the tip (overkill for the kayak but I'll end up using it for live lining 12 inch bunker) Cleaned each reel with goo gone and took apart/oiled every moving part. I was able to pick up a casting 10 foot rod and moved another conventional over so now one of these is on a 12 foot beefstick. I set the cast control and was throwing 2 oz of weight 75 yards, hopefully with more weight I'll be able to get past 100 yards.

Sight fishing? Or was there some sort of structure you were targeting?

Surf. My buddy and I got 7, 3 keepers and kept our limit. The only thing I looked for was a bar that was twice as far out as I could cast with a deep slough and an opening in the bar where fish could cross over. I found it lol. The bar was about 250-300yrds and the slough was approximately 10-15’ deep at high tide which is plenty deep for bigger fish. I kinda strategized where I fished based off of cobia sightings in boats and on piers and prior knowledge of the spot.

Thanks! One of those days where the rods went off in spurts. The two biggest hit about 30 seconds apart.

Well looks like everyone had a great weekend of fishing! I fished OI for about 6 hours on Saturday. We had between 5 and 8 rods out (the current got really strong where 5 and 6 oz of weight wouldn't hold bottom for very long) Only caught a mullet and a croaker. Interestingly, both on cut mullet with 9/0 circle hooks. A slow day but had a blast driving the taco on the beach.
