Hi all, I'm new around here, but I have already found a lot of interesting topics and discussions. I was hoping to get some help with a question I have.

I have had my brand new 2018 TRD sport for around 1k miles and so far I'm loving it! But I have one major concern: While breaking, I feel a strong vibration, not on the brake pedal or the steering wheel, but on the entire cabin, I feel it in my whole body and I can see and hear the passenger seat vibrating as well. The effect is strongest at around 40 - 45 mph and when going downhill. Sometimes it is so strong that it makes me feel a bit dizzy (imagine grabbing your head and shaking it quickly). Also, when applying the brakes at low speeds I have noticed a kind of "grab" and "release" effect.
Is this kind of vibration normal? Or should the braking be completely smooth ? Could it be caused by any of the truck's safety/braking systems? I usually drive without any load on the bed and a friend suggested that this might be the cause, but I'm not sure about that. Should I take my taco to the dealer ASAP?

    I would appreciate any help!

    Thanks.

If you are slamming on the brakes to activate the anti lock brake system, then you’ll feel the vibrations in the pedals and everywhere really. But as long as you’re not doing that, I would suggest bringing the truck in to get looked at. Describe to the tech exactly what you said here so they can recreate the problem. Good luck OP and let us know how it goes.

Did you change out anything on the truck? Tires, brakes, wheels, anything?

Thanks for the reply! It happens even if I barely press the brake pedal. Also I haven't changed anything yet. I will make an appointment and report back.

I have been noticing mine doing this at 60 mph or higher. Not slamming the brakes, but putting pressure on them. Down below 50 mph no problem. Mine is a 2015 sport with 26 k on it. I need to pull the tires and check the brakes. But that's one disadvantage of having the dealer rotate the tires. I hope they have been checking.

    An update:

I took the truck to the dealership. A mechanic took a drive with me and I was able to demonstrate the issue. Two days later they called and say it was a problem with the drums, they said they need to be resurfaced and tried to charge me for it, which of course, I refused. They agreed to give the truck free of charge "as a courtesy", and check them again at 3k miles, but noting that it wasn't an "under warranty" fix, since they found "evidence" of overheating and tried to put the blame on me. This is bullshit of course since I have been very gentle with it, no heavy loads, no towing, no off-roading, no harsh braking, just plain, boring, city driving. How could I have caused such a damage in less than 1 month?
I was seriously pissed-off, so I took the truck and left. I'm going to fill a complaint tomorrow and see how it goes.
I have to mention that the braking is very smooth now, so the issue was fixed (at least temporarily). But, I'm concerned that this was just a sympthon of a more serious issue, like this: https://www.carcomplaints.com/news/2018/toyota-tacoma-bent-rear-axles-warp-brake-drums-lawsuit.shtml

Hopefully this was just a one-time issue, since I really love my tacoma.

I was going to suggest drum brake issue, I hope it’s fixed for you. If it occurs again, maybe try a different dealer?
