    Hi everyone,

Earlier today I went to install some new struts on my 2017 tacoma and once I got the front of the truck up and on jack stands I noticed my passenger cv axle was very oily/greasy. The cv axle is oily on the big black part the goes into the front differential. I put my hand on the oily part of the cv and gave it a good shake. There is alittle bit of up and down play, but not much. But there seems to be a lot of play in and out where the cv goes into the differential. I compared the in and out play to the driver side cv and there is no where near as much play.

I have had a front suspension noise that sounds metal on metal when going over speed humps at like any speed over 15 mph. I was thinking it was the front strut because it sounds a lot like this members truck https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...-this-sound-i-dont-think-it-is-normal.490175/ and his problem was solved with new front strut and top cap.

Now my question is this amount of in and out play consider normal? Could the cv be making the noise im hearing on speed humps? Could the in and out play ruin a seal in the front differential and that's why it's oily? Or maybe I have two separate issues. I have looked above the cv and can't find any other oil anywhere, only on the part that goes into the front differential. No oil on the drive side cv only on the passenger side. I have checked the cv boot and don't see any tears.

Here is a video of the play on the passenger side cv and you also see how oily it is.

    Thanks for the help.

    Looks normal to me ?
The snap ring allows a little movement like that.

I took the truck into dealership this morning and they said the passenger side axle seal has a very small leak. Dealership didn’t have the seal in stock, so they are ordering it and should have it tomorrow. All should be fixed under warranty.

not true, there should be a small amount of play. What we're seeing in the video looks normal to me, must be a small leak in the seal causing the oily residue.

Inner CV joint have a snap ring, That's so they slide and snap in, and therefore snap out when removing them. The outer part of the axle and hub hold the axle in place. That play you have is normal and acceptable. The oil you have may have come from the oil seal the CV joint slides into. It may have been damaged during axle installation.
