Hi fellow Tacomers. I need to buy new tie rod ends (inner and outer) for my 2008 TRD Off Road and my question is; is there a difference between 2WD and 4WD tie rod ends? Any brands you may recommend?

    Thanks anticipated;

    Vic

The 4WD and the Prerunner uses the same parts.

The 2WD 5 Lug Tacoma may be different and probably is.

Also note there is no " Inner Tie Rod End ". The inner end is inside of the steering rack.

That's what I figured. All my vehicles have either been new so they were good or old so I just replaced them. These seem fine but leaking the grease. Is there a way to check for bind w/out removing them? I usually destroy them when I remove them.

Also, are there quality grease-able tie-rods for our trucks out there?

you can replace the inner tie-rods. they are the same for both sides. they will unbolt from the rack. the large nut to unbolt them is under the dust boot. moog makes a inner tie rod for the truck.

There are inner tie rod ends available for the Tacoma Prerunner and 4WD models. I have replaced mine before.

I went with Moog a few months ago for the inners and Duralast for the outers. Even with the same part numbers I was given a few different styles of boots on the outer portion. So check the box before you leave the store. Most stores rent a special tool to remove to inner. Don’t forget new clamps for the boots.

Not trying to argue, but that isn't a tie rod end.

That is a steering rack end. I've never seen a bad one.

That's an inner tie rod end all day long.. toyota doesn't list them because they want to sell you the whole rack

They do get loose, mostly on American crap

Interesting, never heard them called that. It’s pretty common for them to wear out and bend if you off-road a bunch, the moogs seem to last me around 2 year befor developing play, assuming I don’t bend them first.

I have a whole pile if you want to see your first lol.

Sorry Bro, See the image I posted from the Toyota Service Manual above...

The below image has true Inner and Outer Tie Rod ends with a Center Link, Pitman Arm and Idler Arm.

It is more symantics than anything else and people trying to define between the two systems.

    upload_2018-5-22_0-15-18.jpg

When they went to rack and pinion steering it is a different animal.

    Wishbone,
Thanks for the offer, but I have seen more than my share of both tie rod ends and steering rack ends. You can call them Hoopity Doos if you want, but it doesn't make it correct.

I have seen them called both online and in auto prints. I concede the point.

potato, patoato. here at BMW i have seen three different names for the same part. it all depends on how that person translates from the country of origin. example tension struts, torsion rods, thrust arms. all the same part.
