Is there a consensus here on differential oil?

I think I used valvoline, not sure but no complaints

 

I know. I wasn't sure if said oil works well in the engine, if their gear oil would work well in the diff.s. I hear otherwise

 

It's an interesting study, but it would have more weight if it were not paid for by Amsoil.

 

Toyota manual transmissions love Redline MT90 so that's all I've used in mine for many years, and I use it in the transfer case as well. I use Valvoline synthetic 75W90 in the front and rear diffs because I can get it on sale locally (just picked some up for $8/quart at Pep Boys last week).

 

I use Toyota gear oil in my diffs and transfer case.

 

Just decided to swap my diffs and tcase over to supertech full syn 75w90. At 5.50$ a qrt you cant beat it and it works just as good as any other brand ive ever used

 

Do I need LSD additives in the 2015 sport rear diff?

 

No. No mechanical LSD after 2008.

super tech is made by WPP or warren petroleum products who make also MAG1 and Coastal and other lubricants. Most Toyota dealerships and Parts dept. will use MAG1 gear oil instead of the Toyota branded stuff. for an every 30k OCI you really cant beat Super tech.

 

I know this thread is old, but I had a lot to say in it. Now I have some new information that some might find interesting. Last spring I finally pulled the gen 2 (8.0/8.4) axle out. It had 195,000 miles on it, and it was getting tired. I replaced it with a gen 3 8.75" rear axle out of a 2018. This axle is pretty much plug and play for anyone interested. The 8.75 is what Toyota should have put in the gen 2, but they didn't even make it standard in the gen 3. It's only available in some models. Anyway, the 8.75 is a beast. It's not just .75" larger in diameter. Everything about it is hugely stronger. The axle tube, the housing, the thickness of the gears, everything. It even takes a full qt more oil. The axle I got was out of a wrecked truck with less than 10,000 miles. I put new gears in it and an ARB air locker. I was surprised to see that the old gear set barely looked broken in. When I put in my new gears, I also installed a temp probe, just like I did in my Gen 2 axle to monitor the break in, etc. It took nearly 8,000 miles for the new gears to fully settle down! I did the break in with dino oil, then switched to Redline as before. The bigger axle is running 20 to 30 degrees cooler! That's because it is sized right and running under much less stress as a result. For anyone looking for a rear axle upgrade for heavy use, this is it.

A very well known Toyota expert on YouTube verified one time that Mobil makes and bottles the Toyota labeled oils for them including their engine-oil, differential and transfer case oil and Toyota WS automatic transmission fluid.

I don't tow anymore so I used Mobil1 Synthetic 75w90 gear oil in all three units when I changed them, and had the dealer do the fluid change on the transmission with Toyota WS fluid which I believe is a fully-synthetic version of Mercon-V fluid.

 

I'm at 180k on Mobil 1 Full Synthetic fluids all around. No issues thus far.
