oh boy yes I have yet another question....(just a leetle paranoid about screwing up now that it's SHOWTIME ). Haynes says disable ignition and fuel pump, then turn engine over til oil light goes out. How long is too long? The FSM makes a point about not cranking it for longer than (IIRC ) 10 seconds at a time.
I wasn't timing it w/ a stopwatch but I cranked it 3 times in a row for at least 5 seconds each time. Long enough to make an UNBELIEVABLE mess in/on my freshly cleaned/shined/NEW engine bay and contents. (Going on some perhaps questionable advice  I put about 3-4 tablespoons oil down spark plug holes Friday-figured I'd rather have some as opposed to no oil in cyls; after all, it's been sitting since the end of July........dammit). Anyways, oil light still on. How to know if system primed?

What the heck are you talking about? Is this a new engine or a new rebuilt engine never run before? Is it because it hasn’t run in several months? What exactly are you trying to accomplish?

new cylinder head along w/many other misc new parts. Truck been stationary 9 months. Dry. Started it up this am, wow total smokeout. Didn't let it run more than a bit over 10 minutes because 1) the temp gauge never moved and 2) the upper radiator hose was hot enough the thermo should have opened but didn't. & that's one of the few things I didn't replace-spent too much already. Have a new one now. When did thermostats get so expensive?

Just put a manual oil pressure gauge on so you can see what is really going on with your oil pressure.

when your happy remove it and go back to your light

Did you have the oil pump apart ??
