Pretty sure you could just swap in 4 of these puppies and get between a 2-3 inch lift on the highest setting. Nobody here is gonna recommend blocks to you.

If you go that route, make sure and get new coils (OME 887 or 888's for +$180~). And you'll need an AAL or block for the back if you want to keep it level.

    @HeadStrong Off-Road sells a complete kit.
    https://www.headstrongoffroad.com/store/p401/Coil/Bilstein_5100_Kit_(HS16BK-1).html

Depending if you want 2" or 3" of lift..you may need new UCA's as well to get it in alignment and reduce rub.

yea if you don't get coils you can put it at the highest setting if you so please to reach your desired height or any other setting.

leveling lift, wheel spacers, yakima cross bars for the canoe.
You can get a spacer lift for super cheap, rough country and others sell them. They are cheap, easy to install and work fine for most people. Not the preferred method on this site, but they work and many run them. I have 2.5" spacers up front and 2" blocks in the rear and running 33" tires no problems.

i'm glad this thread started.... as i'm thinking about this a lot lately - mostly due to the chatter on this forum :)

I have a 2017 Limited... that the dealer did a 3" lift on it for me (using spacers), with TRD Wheels etc. Looks awesome. I'm admittedly a mall crawler, but do a lot of mountain biking, so do see a fair number of trashed out forest roads, etc. Not really planning any serious off roading, but would like the confidence to know that I can get through most stuff i'll see on the way to a trailhead.

I've been thinking about a suspension upgrade (again, reading all the forums and backlash on spacers)…. and of course the 5100's come up quite a bit.

Knowing the type of use i'm suggesting, what would this get me? any smoother on the road? Less nasty cup-caking throwing stares from other forum members? :)

Let me save you some money... you can get through any roads you have the courage (balls) to get through, in a stock Tacoma. No lift, no sliders, no winch, no nothing except a stock 4WD Tacoma. 90% driver skill, 10% vehicle. Most guys who offroad all the time will tell you NOT to lift, as it raises your center of gravity and increases rollover chances.

However, if you are lifting for show, then go for it as that is what most people are doing it for anyway.

    thanks... super helpful.

to be clear though, mine is already lifted :) ... for show :)

but if i was made of cash, what would the 5100's (for example) get me?

From a Limited OEM suspension? A softer ride, which is better off road, not so good (body roll) on road. That's pretty much it. To get any real off road improvement, you need to A) Define what you will be doing off road and B) Decide how much you want to spend. For example, if you were high speed desert running, A King suspension with remote reservoirs is the way to go. If you were rock crawling, an Icon Stage 2 or 3 is the way to go. If you are just generally putzing around off road then stock is just fine. Don't get caught up in the hype. For looks, a spacer lift is sufficient.

Actually, let me take it a step further: Your stock suspension is the best "compromise" suspension you can have. It handles great on the highway. It gives you the ability to go off road, although not as well as some of the other models, but you don't have the greater body roll on the highway either. Your stock suspension will last a long time (super reliable) with no maintenance. When you need new shocks, simply throw the old ones away and the new ones are cheap.

That's what I mean by compromise. Any change you make is going to cost you somewhere like on road handling, off road handling, maintenance, reliability and durability and cost.

Because when people take them off-road the struts break. Not surprising, don’t put a spacer lift on anything you beat on. For show and pavement pounding, you’re fine.

This comment really helped me understand the different settings on aftermarket coils/shocks. Figured I share it.

Why do city dwellers grow beards and wear flannel?
Why do people talk shit from the safety of their keyboards?
Why do people with no athletic ability criticize pro players?
Why do fat women wear yoga pants?
Why do guys who will NEVER go off road spend thousands to get a "look" of toughness?
Why do people think they are smarter than the engineers who designed it?

    none yet
    1) because they want to look rugged without actually being
    2) because no one can punch them in the face through a computer for being wrong or a dumbass
    3) because the invention of xbox and playstation have made everyone a subject matter expert on all things Military, Driving, Fighting and Sport related
    4) because they think it says one size fits all ( just because you can doesn't mean you should)
    5) because how else will anyone be impressed by such awesomeness that is a lift, big tires and shit gas mileage while having the cleanest truck around...oh resale thats why..my bad
    6) because mom and dad said they are smart and the only people who tell them they are wrong is random people on the interwebs that honestly have more experience in real life but mom and dad are truth tellers and everyone else is a liar ... also because google told me so....everything on the internet is TRUE

We need to know what your budget is to determine what's budget friendly.

Anything over 2.5 inches will likely require aftermarket UCA's to get a decent alignment which would add $400-600 in addition to the lift. If 2 inches or less a decent lift can be done for under $800.

with the 5100 set at the lowest and using 887 coils, would you be needing to change your UCA?

Depends on the truck, some do to get a decent alignment some don't.
