Picked up a new release today. I wasn't really liking the thumb release, and having given my old wrist release to my brother, which was 10 years old anyways, this was a good excuse.

Got an "Apostle" from Cabela's. Looking forward to trying it out on the range later this week.

i find it relaxing, i focus on my form and getting that surprise release. After awhile you'll kno if its a good shot just by the feel.

I am not a big fan of the "surprise" release. I do understand the concept, but I much prefer to intentionally time the release of the arrow. Of course, with that comes the possibility of trigger punching and target panic. Do you do more target shooting or hunting?

A surprise release is the only way to shoot. There are too many demons that can come from trying to anticipate or command the shot.

I guess I just don't understand that use of the term "surprise." How is it a surprise if you're initiating the release sequence with your back tension? To me, "surprise" would be if you're drawing the bow back and the release disengages, sending your arrow bouncing off into where ever. THAT would be a surprise.

That certainly would be a surprise!! There are releases out that fire strictly on tension (not a hinge that most folks mistakenly call a back tension release). Look for a Carter Evolution or Carter Silverback. My boy and I use them for hunting and target. Surprise can also be a misleading term. What you want is an unanticipated release. When I shoot the Silverback my focus is on pulling, not aiming. By doing this my pin settles down more and the shots fire clean. Look up Nock On Archery, John Dudley runs it and provides more free resources that you can imagine. His podcasts are amazing. He's a coach for many international teams, has many titles to his name and is the best source of archery information going.

Its definitely a blast! I like rifle shooting but when they are close its a whole different ball game! Any move can be a wrong one...then when you shoot and it hits the target and you hear the deer crash its exhilarating!

Dudley is a great teacher and resource. I am very familiar with Nock On Archery. I have not listened to his podcasts, but I am going to now! I also really enjoy Lancaster Archery's "Thing a Week" on YouTube.

My Brother in Law has a Carter Evolution, and I just couldn't get used to it. I am sure, with all things, practice would make perfect, but for now I will be sticking to my wrist releases.

I'm in my late 50's and I prefer a bow over a crossbow...but.. my body says otherwise.
Anchors and shoelaces holding one shoulder together and anchors in my other arm holding my bicep together. I also have 4 tears in my other shoulder, sitting idle for now.
I took my compound out a few times last season and I'm pretty confident with it but I'm more so with my crossbow.
Such is life. At least i'm still in the game.
