The problem being it sounds is the dealer is willing to install the tow hitch but it's probably an aftermarket one which they should be able to wire an aftermarket wiring harness into the truck. It's only like 4 wires I think (maybe 3). I understand your complaint about not getting an OEM factory wiring harness plug, but that's what happens when you don't order it with the truck usually.

I have my SR wired up to tow (utilizing the bumper cutout), and I even have a Prodigy P3 brake controller installed. Etrailer has everything you need, calm yo tits.

Needless to say...salesman strung you along to sell the truck. If you needed to tow you should have gotten the tow package - which is only a $700 package by itself. Despite what the salesmen probably said you do not have to get the premium and/or tech package to get the towing package. Doesn't surprise me at all that Toyota is not interested in putting a tow package on a Tacoma after the fact. I'd say you have two options.

    1) Aftermarket
    2) Trade for Tacoma with tow package

This was posted by @NEAScott some time ago. I can confirm that it works. etrailer.com has the 40975/40985 combo. If you want 12V power to the 7 pin, you have more work to do, but it is not much at all.

I also have the same Curt wiring harness that etrailer will direct you to by entering your vehicle. There are instructional videos on how to install. My only gripe with the Curt kit, is the sticky tape ... get something better for that (I used Gorilla tape, outdoor).

I can’t tell you how many times when I worked for an auto group people came back bitching because they bought a vehicle that couldn’t tow what they needed it to. Between a sales person just trying to make a deal and not truly figure out the customers needs, or the customer trying to cheap out or get into a base model of something they really can’t afford. Then only to bring it back in a few days later and we tell them it doesn’t have the tow capacity due to lack of oil and tranny coolers, or just the wrong Powertrain set up in general. Then you tell them the price to add all the stuff they will need and their jaw hit the floor. Luckily for most of our customers our auto group took the cost on the chin, or split the cost in some cases. Either way I find it crazy some of these people think their car or small suv or truck can pull anything they hook up to it. Bottom line do your research, and it’s well worth the cost to get a factory tow package if you plan to do ANY towing at all

Thanks...I knew when I was doing my research that it could easily tow the weight i needed it to tow, just could not have imagined that they would provide a place to put a wiring harness, but refuse to sell a wiring harness...

I most emphatically did do adequate research...I challenge you to find anywhere on here where people complain that a 4 cylinder tacoma won't tow 2000 lbs (in fact it is quite the opposite) or where anyone has run into the same issue with toyota not selling a wiring harness...I left the parts, service, and sales people scratching there heads and saying that this is new top them...

However...I'm hopeful that this become enough of an issue that they will soon rectify the situation by simply selling the wiring the harness!

If you can kindly post the link to the wiring harness, I will begin the cooling process...thanks

You will be fine towing a couple thousand pounds, it is a truck after all.

He has the 4 cylinder which was never offered with the 6 speed. Only the 5 speed.
I believe the 4 cylinder is only rated to tow 3500 pounds and has no option for the tow package. Only the V6 has the tow package option.
