I just did this exact same thing, towhook from harbor freight for 8.95

I turned mine the opposite direction as yours, tried it upright the first time but didn't feel there was enough clearance to get a strap on it.

Where'd you get that skid plate from? looks good, I'd like to upgrade mine, but don't wanna get reamed at the dealer.

good idea back to ya... the way mine is setup, it allows for a 3/4" shackle to attach to the hook which holds the strap just fine. the shackle just barely fits though.
