Dust Under Clear Coat

Hey Everyone,

I just bought a new TRD OR in BBP and I've found a few small particles under the clear coat. They're tiny dark pieces that blend in fairly well with the metallic blue, but it's pretty obvious in the right light due to the bump in the clear coat. Is this common with these trucks? If so, what has Toyota done to fix it for you (assuming you chose to get it fixed)?

No paint job is perfect, not even Mercedes. The key is realistic expectations. If it is a ton of dirt in the paint right in the middle of the hood is one thing, a bit of dust back near the gas tank door is something else. Good luck, nut unless it is really bad I would never want to break the factory finish.

 

I generally agree. I'm just curious how common this is. I've had great luck with all of my cars in the past, so I was kinda surprised. One spot isn't too obvious since it's on the edge of the left fender between the fender and the hood. Another one is on the left side of the cab behind the passenger door, around chest height. The most annoying one is right on top of the hood, about 8 inches back from the grill...

 

I've owned 30 new cars maybe? Not one has ever had perfect paint lol.

 

I must have been lucky or just had the paint blemishes in less obvious places. The dealer offered to pay for a local body shop to wet sand and polish the spots. I might at least do that for the spot on top of the hood. I kinda look forward to getting some rock chips and scratches when I take it off road so I don't care as much. lol

 

I had rust/dirt stains on my truck that I noticed a little after I firt got it. Clay bar kit got everything out and clean.

 

I could be wrong, I don't think so clay bar will help this. It's definitely under the clear coat. This is the best photo I could get in the garage of the one on the hood. It's a lot more obvious in sunlight.

 

It should wet sand out. Try some 3500 grit and then polish it out. I had a spot on my 18 Sport. No big deal, took about 10 minutes and gone.

 

Trash in the paint is extremely common. Like others have mentioned, even multi million dollar facilities that the major manufacturers have for paint applications still cannot have 100% perfection. If you are considering having it repainted, I'd highly recommend you reconsider.

 

I’d take the one spot of dirt in the clear all day, any day over the chance that some $10 dollar an hour prepper swirls up the entire panel trying to polish it out.

 

Lol true, but it'll need to be wet sanded then buff/polished. No way someone is sanding on my truck unless it's me! Even I wouldn't mess with that though.

 

Talk to your dealer. I bought a new TRD OR and then noticed some streaking marks in the hood paint. Hard to see but definitely noticeable. They paid for the hood to be re painted at a local body shop.

 

I just found one on mine. Just got 18 mgm and I was looking at something else and it just happened to catch my eye. When you touch it, has a very sharp point to it. Scratched at it with my nail a little, but seemed to be in the clear. My GF calls me crazy because it's literally the size of a led pencil point, but for some reason it drives me crazy lol.

They would probably think I was insane if I took it to the dealer, even though I just got it this week. Is this really something common, especially paint from a manufacturer?

 

Yep. Happen with every manufacturer. You should see the trash quality on even higher end stuff like lambos. There is no such thing as a perfect paint job. If it were me (and I found trash in my paint) I wouldnt dare let the dealership body shop repaint a panel over that small of an issue.

 

My coworkers neighbor bought a new Ferrari two years ago and he found 7 spots throughout the car with dirt/trash inside the clear paint. He was very frustrated having to deal with this issue and the dealer.

 

I've worked on the paint of countless $250K+ cars and haven't found a perfect one yet. The expensive ones are just as subject to it as the cheaper stuff.

 

By chance, is this on the hood? Do you have the "hood protector" thats installed at the factory?

 

this is typical of most paint jobs from factory, nothing is perfect and this will happen. that's why show cars are wet sanded and buffed out..

 

I understand you're dropping a lot of money on a new truck and are probably really proud of it. But you're probably just hyper focusing on something 99.99% of the rest of buyers wouldn't think twice about remember... This thing isn't a 2018 911 GT2 RS and never will be. It's a depreciating asset and you're probably never going to get what you paid for it back out of it.

I try and think about it like this.. "Did I pay extra for premium paint?" "Could I have painted it better myself?"
