Plasti-dip FULL TRUCK DIP THREAD

Been thinking of doing mine in army green. I did gunmetal and lasted for at least three years, plus i still have some points from DYC. Springtime...

We spray exteriors around 65mils on average. At that thickness you achieve the tough coating you want and don't add a significant amount of weight. Less than 90 lbs on average for a full size vehicle completely sprayed. About as much weight as your cooler stocked with "sodas" and ice.

 

Although... my cooler is generally a bit heavier

 

Back when I had my STI I rattled the whole thing. About 25 cams just for the white if I remember right. Held up good for about 8 months. With cams it was just so inconsistent. Removal was an absolute nightmare.

 

I met someone at a wheeling event and his whole truck was plastidip in od green. Really cool looking color. On the whole truck

 

I didn't find it to be very durable on wheels. Wasn't but a few weeks before it was bubbling in places. But it was probably the car wash.

 

If it bubbled you did something wrong.

Is that the best way to remove old plasti dip?

 

I would just use the Dip Remover next time around. I have no idea if it works any better than Goo Gone though.

Also, TRAIL UPDATE:


Seems to hold up to general trail abuse, such as mud, tree scrapes, pin striping, etc. Mind you, the pics below are taken on plastidip job that is now over 3 years old.

There were many times that I indiscriminately drove under, around, next to, and otherwise loved on some tree branches. The effects of the branches scraping the were minimal, if at all. There was zero tearing as some other previous posters were concerned with. The most damage were some minor scuffs, most of which can be masked with Ice spray wax.

All that being said, I do have some small speckled stains from other mud encounters that you can see up close. I am not sure if it was some sort of chemical/mineral in that particular dirt, or the fact that it baked in the sun for a couple of weeks before being removed. After this particular outing from the pictures shown above, the truck was garaged the entire time before being washed. I will try to get pics of the offending stains later.

 

Works awesome, but it is a mess. My roof didn't have enough dip on it to peel, so I used the dip dissolver. Worked like a charm, just go easy as you could have liquid dip running everywhere if you cover a large area.

 

My dipped rims are holding out just fine...

 

Really really considering doing the anthracite grey like your truck. By far my favorite color I’ve ever seen on a 1st gen. Just having a hard time deciding to pull the trigger. How long has it held up for you so far?

 

I posted the original post 3.5 years ago.. so I would say it's been about that long. The roof has faded to more of a silver color and has some stains on it. The rest of the truck is 90% as good as it was the day I put it on. I have had to do some touch ups here and there, but it has held up great, and I always get people commenting on it and complimenting it no matter where I go (gas station, grocery store, etc)

 

whenever my clear coat finally goes I may want to try this out, seems to last pretty well

 

I will reiterate that using full strength degreaser (yes even Simple Green) on any color other than white is a bad idea. Don't do it. It makes your paint look weird after... it almost softens it and when you wipe it, it wipes some of the dip off with it.

I'll try to get a pic of this as well as the "mud blemishes" tonight after I wash it.

I also may try to go the Preval sprayer route and touch up some larger areas of the truck.. not sure how it'll turn out as the rattle can color was too light to be a match. Might involve some artistic darkening of the color if I have to buy more anthracite paint in a gallon.
