I'm looking at some new Tiers for my stock truck. I'm putting on a 3in leveling kit. But I want to put the tires on now. What size do I need? Looking at BFG KO2.

Sorry I'm new to all this!

    All the things!
The largest tire that will fit with no rubbing on a stock truck is 265/70/17 or 265/75/16. Any larger and there MAY be rubbing, depending on wheel offset and tire brand/model.

Just wait til you get the kit installed, your choices will grow exponentially with the extra space after the fact.

Welcome to TW. Just do a quick search and you will get about a bazillion wheel, tire, lift suggestions. A 265/70/17 may rub the mudguards if you have them installed. Mine do, I live with it.

Lift does not equate to tire clearance

Fitting larger tires also depends on what wheels you are running (B/S and offset), certain tires are also slightly larger or smaller depending on the brand. Just because you put a lift on your vehicle does not guarantee that you can fit a certain tire size. There are many other factors at play.

Edit: Also your alignment plays a factor too, but perhaps I should have said "lift alone does not equate to fitting larger tires"

As I said above, lifting alone doesn't mean you can fit larger tires, it depends on a number of factors.

    Let me explain:
Let's say you lift 3" right? And, you fit a 285 tire on stock rims no problem... while it's sitting still lol. When you drive it, especially off road, your suspension travel will compress... and take your tire back to the same spot it was before you lifted.

So, whatever tire size you choose, you need to be able to fit that tire, with no rubbing, at stock height.

Now, if you lift 6", that kit is substantially different and the lift will be able to fit big tires. You have to cut a crossmember tho.

No. If you put a big tire on your lifted truck, it has to be able to clear throughout the full suspension travel. What that means is, when you compress your suspension, your tire will be back at it's pre lifted position. This means that if you can't fit that big tire at stock height, it won't work at lifted height.

6" lift requires cutting the actual crossmember, not just the cab mount. When you go there, no more warranty lol.

No he is not talking about the cab mount when he says you need to cut the cross member for a 6" lift

    Edit: See ^^^

Ok so end of the day, the new tire has to be able to fit in a stock truck even tho the truck is lifted?

Yes. The tire has to not rub throughout the full suspension articulation.

But how would you know if you’re not off-roading with the same tire size?

You would be surprised how much suspension travel is used on the road in normal driving. Pot holes, curves, speed bumps at the malls, etc. In addition, full lock turns when backing up is a definite test.

If it's a 6"+ lift then yeah, the lift helps a lot to clear but opens up a whole host of other challenges, like cutting crossmembers.
For 3" and less, even running 33's require a lot of cutting and beating to fit. Cab mount chop, removing some plastic, flattening pinch welds with a big hammer, etc. To some, it's worth it. Good luck but those are the facts.

There's at least one thread totally covering how all of this works.

You're free to lift and get 35s if you want, but don't be surprised when you don't get any buyers for your tires once you discover that they don't really fit.

Ok here’s my question. Right now I have stock 265/65/17 I’m getting new tires and want 265/70/18. Now those are 2” bigger then the stock ones. So as long as I have say 1 1/4” clearance all around the stock tire, couod I not fit those bigger ones?
If not then I would go up one size at 265/65/18
