yes thats the button i was talking about. activate that button when you are towing and you'll be fine. no need to manually shift anything. towed our travel trailer (about 4000 pounds) from grand rapids back to s.jersey (about 11 hours) and there was never a reason to manually shift anything as long as that button was activated. towed fine. wish the truck held more gas but it didn't have any trouble towing.

rule of thumb from what i've read is to try and stay 1000 pounds below your max tow weight. you aren't going very far either so a tacoma sounds like a decent choice. just expect about 8 mpg when towing.

    2017 Tacoma OR 4x4 (formerly a 1998 SR5 PU, 2002 OR 4x4, 1995 4x4 4Runner, 1985 4x4 Toy PU) ... and RIP’s (rust in pieces) to a Bronco II 4x4 & S10 Blazer 4x4
Here’s my setup with a 21’ Jayco (about 4500lbs on this extended trip). I averaged a bit more than 9mpg, but expect less if driving over 55-60mph with 4500lbs! Also zoom into the photos and notice my and @abodyjoe ‘s hitches- definitely get a weight distribution and anti-sway hitch, the system on the truck is good, but really rock steady with this kind of hitch, even when semi trucks barrel by and when there are strong gusty side winds. And even though you are getting a boat which is lower profile than a travel trailer, the weight distribution will help even out your boat’s weight on the back of the truck, and especially since you will have a heavy motor on the back of the trailer, it will dampen any swaying from that also.

Another option you may want to consider is putting an add a leaf (I did), or Firestone airbags, on the back springs of your truck. Tacomas tend to have softer springs which will make the back sag when you put the weight of a trailer on it. I imagine this affect will be even worse if you have a long bed.

It would be painful to go down to the 2.7 liter engine, but that is the 4 cylinder. He's looking at a V6, 4.0 liter.

I tow a 21' boat that weighs around 4000 loaded... which is why I traded my Tacoma for a truck with more torque and better gas mileage than the 12 mpg I got towing.

Get a bigger truck would be my advice.
