What have you done to your Tacoma today? 1st Gen Edition

Just dropped my Tacoma off at the mechanic. After doing a whole frame swap myself I really didn't want to start another huge repair and the repairs can't wait. Im sitting at 220,000 miles with a timing belt that was either changed around 100,000 or never changed . Toyota has no service records for the truck. And all the belts are OEM? so who knows lol. There was only one previous owner before I bought it in January but he took it off the lot and never took it back.

The mechanic I found was Toyota's Master Mechanic for their Dealership for something like 30 years though, and He decided at some point to open a shop with his dad. He was nerding out hardcore! He couldn't shut up about how much he loves 1st Gens. He was pretty happy to be apart of my build. Feels pretty good to take your truck to someone so enthusiastic about his work. I can't wait to get it back! New frame, new belts, new brakes, all fluids flushed and changed, all joints greased. I just gotta get one hose for my AC and I will be ready to hit the road this summer!!!

 

That's a pain from a diagnostics standpoint but from an actual fix the damn thing standpoint it is a pretty easy fix and ECUs aren't too expensive.

 

Ditto on that, I was happy to find an enthusiastic group to work on my Land Cruiser too. Nice thing about vehicles with cult followings I suppose haha

True; that thread is always in the back of my mind every time I hook something up to my battery, usually my air compressor. I always triple check that I didn't have a dyslexic moment before turning it on haha.

 

I reverse-jumped my 5-lug the night I had it towed home on the trailer. It was dark and the wires weren't labeled since they were re-done at some point.

It blew the main 80 Amp fuse, the Ignition fuse, the EFI fuse, the Horn fuse... thank god it didn't fry the ECU.

 

Same here, I'm very anal about labeling wiring too. All of the main supply wires to my battery are either black or red to correspond with B+ or ground.

 

Damn, I thought the $680 for my fronts was bad!

 

I'm not wondering haha, boosting around with 33s and I can't get it hotter than 194 haha. It's supposed to be 102 today, but it was 106 yesterday

 

Thinking about it you're probably fine because your battery was there to fight the reverse current and lessen the effect. People who reverse jump usually have toasted batteries that cannot fight back haha

 

Have you tried rolling and dropping the clutch to start it?

True, at least the worst part of a new starter is actually removing the thing, prices aren't bad though.

If the fuses some how survived the reverse cables, your battery might not have if you still have that dinky lil thing in there. Could have melted a plate or two in it. That said, if anything, you could have a dead battery, may show good voltage but could have no charge. Or just clean your connectors.

If the starter will click but not turn that to me says bad battery. If it doesn't like to click even, the contacts in the starter need replaced.

 

My dad made me do it as a small kid so I'd say no, I think big dogs love to do that kind of stuff.

 

I have a 60 pound husky, he likes only 3 things in life, pulling stuff, killing the wildlife that comes in my back yard, and female german shepards.

 

If it continues to run and charge the battery then you know everything is fine but your starter is bad.
Of it dies after awhile and wont charge or wont start then you know you have electrical issues like blow fuses or a bad battery
