Just wondering if anyone has run into this issue...

I recently had a shop install a leveling kit on the front and now they are telling me that because of rust, I need to replace the lower control arms. The tech told me that the leveling kits only add stress to the control arm and other components. Is this all true? Is this what I get for trying to cheaply raise my truck?

Tell us about your self described cheap leveling kit? Brand, type, how much lift etc.

    Pictures of the LCA?

    Miles on truck?

Your question can't be accurately answered until you do.

No. Leveling kits that bolt on top of the strut are not the best way either. The puck style on top of the struts do add more stress on all your joints. Needing control arms replaced sounds like your eccentric cams have seized. Meaning your alignment will be off and not adjusted correctly. However those can be replaced without replacing the control arms. This is time consuming and most shop just simply replace the arms.

Yea I'd need to know more specs, spacer leveling kits are never a good idea. Get some 5100s and coils and call it a day.

Southern truck 2" leveling kit. It just comes with two aluminum spacers that go on top of the shock tower. I have about 72000 miles on it. I can't get a picture of the lca just now but I can tell you that the cams were almost frozen in place. No visible rust but even the tech said that he had a ton of trouble trying to get them out. And when he did hey them out, a bunch of rusted bits came out too.

I guess I should change my question to "are leveling kits adding too much stress to the components?" I don't want to replace them then have the same issue come up in a year or two.

Lots of folks rave over spacer lifts. Lots of folks dislike them.

I guess it's based on how you use the truck and if you like the results or not. They wouldn't be my choice.

Sounds like you haven't had an alignment in a long time, or those cams would have been mentioned to you before. So the question is 'how bad is it'? IE if the cams cannot be properly removed and replaced, new LCAs might be the only option.

Regardless of lift or lift type.

It's funny that you mention that I haven't had an alignment in a while. The shop that installed the spacers 6 days ago did an alignment And I had an alignment done at Toyota about 6 months ago. I'm really pissed no body mentioned the condition of the cams. When it first broke today my truck felt like it was swerving all over the road.

I called Toyota and they said they may be able to get it covered under a warranty. I'm hoping this isn't just their way of getting me to the dealership to try and sell me a new truck. But thanks for the responses.
