There were people in my parents' town that would send yearly letters to everyone who abutted their property warning them to stay off. The must have had a thousand posted signs, a large locked gate, and you definitely did not want them to catch you there. I had heard there was a small Revolutionary War era graveyard on their land. One time, one of them was out near the gate and I stopped by and asked about it and whether I could look for it. She was friendly, but definitely did not want me looking for that graveyard. Guess they'd even give assessors a really hard time to the point where the town would eventually give up on seeing the property. They were people out of Boston, supposedly used the land for a program for troubled city kids to experience the woods.

I get wanting to keep your land private, but with how aggressive they were about it we all thought they were up to something. I had a friend who worked for them at one time and he would only say "no comment."

I looked up their land on the MassGIS viewer--it's about 200 acres and very oddly shaped.

In NH you have to post your land or anyone can hunt or fish it. You really should ask permission, but there is a very old common law that gives the public right of access if the land isn't posted. That's why you see so much posted land up here. Either they hate hunting on their property or they love hunting and want to keep it to themselves. But again, even if it's not posted, you really should get permission and certainly if you encounter a land owner give them the utmost respect and courtesy.

They probably have a huge grow plot out there, lol.

ME is the same way; if it's not posted you can hunt it (as long as you're still obeying the hunting restrictions for roads, houses, etc) but you're better asking permission

There is plenty of bird hunting up here in NH and Maine, no worries about that. What you will learn to hate are the season dates and regulations which are way too short and far too long respectively. I haven't hunted in a long time, when I did I went for deer and bear. I've been considering getting back into it.

Spear fishing is not very popular here, it's too damn cold. I assume some people do it but I hear very little of it. Lots of ocean fish to go for though. Striped bass, haddock, pollock, tuna, shark, groundfish... etc. People that fish the streams are mostly targeting trout via fly fishing. Our salmon fishing is basically 100% put and take in the Northeast, there is virtually no self proliferation of salmonoids here because we have dammed up all our rivers and lakes. I'm a die hard salmon and lake trout fisherman on the managed coldwater lakes here where it's basically all trolling and jigging. And something you didn't mention- ice fishing! Yup, welcome to the Northeast! Bundle up!

When you get here, if you want to do some fishing let me know.

    I did that in Vt.
When I wasn't hunting national Forest, I made an effort to contact/meet landowners with non-posted land.
Most were surprised as well as happy that I took the time to talk to them.
It worked out well. Sometimes a landowner would tell me what areas to avoid as logging would be taking place or tell me where they would see game. All good.

Kids, lots of work, but so worth it. Being a parent is not easy, and far to many people take it as an easy task. That's not fair to the kids they brought into this world.

I'm the other hand, being a kid is. I easy task either. All these adults telling you what to do, when to do it and how to do it.

Or as I have been dealing with this week, watching your parent struggle in pain.

Take an extra moment and hug those kids, life will throw you a big ass Curveball when your not expecting it, and you may not have a chance to do it.

Hey, at least New Hamster lets you hunt Sunday. If I want to go hunting, I either need to take time off or be limited to 4-5 days in a season because I can only hunt Saturdays.

That's kind of what we thought.

A brook went through their land and there was a waterfall on it. I used to walk down the brook, which I think is always a right-of-way in MA. You could get to it without actually being on their land, and they had signs on either side of the brook facing the woods. You wouldn't encounter the signs until you were way down the brook. One time there were people at the waterfall. The guy said "I don't care that you're here and you're safe today because the owners are away and I'm watching the place. But a warning--when they're back you do not want them catching you, trust me."

I could be wrong about the right-of-way thing, but when I bought my house I guess they weren't thrilled with the way the deed was written because it says "to a point in the middle of the Hoosac River" and I guess technically, it has to stop at the edge.

x2, even on my kids' worst day, I love being a dad. It's extremely difficult, but the good moments are more than worth the effort.

I sort of did, he was pulled down the road about 300 feet from our entrance and I drove over to talk to him ha

If they are keeping children there, that are "troubled" which means no one really is keeping track of them...that sounds like the start of a horror movie.

Our property is completely open to our clients, so it isn't like no one ever comes and walks around, we actually encourage it. People are stopping in a lot to look around randomly too and that isn't a problem either. When you open your land to the public though you open yourself up to all sorts of extra liability. There are also lots of stories in these parts about environmentalists planting plants, or poking in where they don't have permission then calling it in to protect an area. Removing your ability to control your land. Someone did this to the property we currently are living at, and now we can't mow part of our field, and had it declared wetland, literally after just driving by. So while it might not be common, it happens and it is a risk we don't want to exacerbate.

The land is posted. The guy I spoke with last week drove by slowly, looked at about 30 posted signs then turned around and pulled right over. Said "Oh I was just going to walk back there and check the stream for fish" I told him that'd be doing two of the three things not allowed by the sign right in front of him and he replied "I've lived here for 40 years and sometimes that's more important"

I've been here 3 years, never came by to introduce himself. He saw me as he was driving by and waved back when I waved at him, he didn't stop and ask. I am finding most people just don't give a damn about a posted sign.

I had a math teacher in H.S. who was like 60. I remember asking him if he had any kids and he told me "No, but I sure did practice a lot". I've always thought it was the funniest thing and it stuck with me.

I'd love to be able to be a grandfather without being a father. But having my own kids is definitely not an option, so oh well.
