You will read many things that conflict for this question, but the only thing that is clear across the board is that the LX (considered the same as the base version of the Tacoma) doesn't come with more chrome trimmings like the SR5.

That said, both LX and SR5 come with options for everything else from power windows/locks/tachometer/etc. It just varies by what the original purchaser choose to have optioned in along with their choice of trim difference. Honestly the differences are pretty negligible.

Later on the LX was then replaced and SR5 essentially became the standard in place of the LX (or DLX), and was surpassed by the Limted which included leather interiors, and from what believe (I may be wrong here) all power options like power windows/locks/tachometer.

I thought SR5 designation was for the 5-speed manual transmission trucks.

I've done a mod or two
None of the designations mean anything, I'm not joking they really are a complete grey area.

The Tacoma SR5 is a standard mid-size pickup truck with a special SR5 option package. The SR5 option packages offer numerous power, audio and comfort features; however, the basic structure of the Tacoma does not change.

My 01 was an sr5. The sr5 package consisted of the plastic sr5 badges on the side of the cab. That's pretty much the only thing guaranteed. Think of the long list of options available on any vehicle and you have a list of things that truck did not have, including such high end niceties like intermittent wipers and power anything. But it did have the little badges, that were losing their chrome.

Both are Stock - built correct from the start.
Way back it did. Back in 1980 I had a 79 Toyota SR5. At the time the standard transmission was a 4spd. The SR5 got me 5spd, gage package, bucket seats, sport wheels, stripes and some chrome.

The SR5 on the 95-97 meant a different graphics package, bucket seats, a little more chrome and came standard with the V6. You could also get an optional sunroof and a CD changer in the console. I also think the driver seat had manual lumber support. 98 model year dropped the LX and went to Base, SR5 and Limited. You could also get the SX package on regular cabs in 95-97 model years.

I imagine a lot of people coming in and ordering an LX with power and sliding rear window, chrome and a few other tidbits and not checking the 2500 dollar box for SR5 convinced Toyota to drop it.

This. My Dads 96 LX had everything the SR5 did except the bucket seats and sunroof. Never noticed the difference.

Sr5 really just mean more chrome on stuff. Lx is suppose to be more base modle with manual everything but you can add any options to it if you wanted so you can gave a lx just as nice as a limited but has a lx badge
