Yes, that is your brake booster. My Tacoma was an off-road and made the same slight noise, as well as a ‘squish’ sound at the moment of being depressed. Automatic Tacoma’s and 4runners have the brake booster because we have crawl control which uses this technology. My 4runner makes the same slight noise.

Sadly this is normal and annoying as Sh*t depending on your specific TRD OR/PRO.

This is the secondary brake booster used for the Crawl Control and Multi Terrain Select systems which come in the OR and PRO.

Pretty much every 2nd or 3rd time you hit the brake you will feel a clunk followed by a buzzing sensation in the pedal for about 3 seconds. Some trucks this is barley noticeable and others (like mine) it's annoying as sh*t and super noticeable. My instrument cluster even dims a little when the booster comes on...seriously, try it...yours will dim too.

Noticed this and the transmission searching for gears on my 3 test drives and was told all of that would go away in a few 1000 miles...i'm at 6k and this rig does my head in....

Go drive a TRD Sport or SR5...they have a much smoother brake feel because they don't have Crawl Control and in my opinion they shift better too if they don't have the tow package.

Just wondering if I can take my 2018 Taco Off Road back and swap it for the Sport or either for the SR5? Lol

Yes. Very normal and discussed here a good bit.

Imy 17 4runner has the same booster but I don’t feel it nor hear it.

    Enjoy the new truck

Now that’s odd. My Tacoma never did all that, yours sounds extra annoying. My runner is extremely quiet and barely noticeable, much smoother than the Tacoma I had.

@GimmeATaco so what your saying is that? Once I break it in, see if it will go away?

No I don’t think it will go away, I just think it’s more noticeable on some trucks thank others. When I pointed out the clunk and buzzing in the pedal on my test drives I was told it would go away...but that’s not true.

I have test driven a coupe other TRD OR trucks and it’s much less noticeable on them compared to mine.

If it bothers you you can take it in to the dealer and they may try swapping to brake booster but others have had that done with little to no change...but that’s not worth the risk of the dealer mechanic getting brake fluid on your paint.

My guess is I’m missing some rubber bushing somewhere which insulates the vibration of the booster mount from the pedal a bit. Tempted to tighten the brake pedal bolt a little and see if that makes a difference.

I have 2018 TRD off-road 4x4 AT. 2days old. I’m super concerned about this vibration/ and motor turning on EVERY OTHER TIME I press the brake. The vibration changes the feel of your breaking sensitivity almost preventing the pedal from being pushed down at the same ease as when the vibration isn’t there. I understand the booster motor turning on. But why does it so'it only while your breaking.

I’m pissed. Took it back today and got the “it’s normal”talk. Hadn’t read up,on it yet. Going to different dealer as soon as I can. Gonna say it’s unsafe.

@Mtnfly I feel u. I'm pretty sure is normal but it sucks! I'm also experiencing the same problem on my Brand new 2018 Tacoma OR also. I heard it only applies on the OR and the PRO. But I'm getting used to it now.
