    howzit fellas,

So I may be moving back to Hawaii next year and wanted to get some local opinions.

    I have a 2000 4x4 v6 access cab MT with 180K miles...

It is what I want and I have done a few things to it already, nothing that would keep it from passing recon...

My biggest pro is I already have it and its what I want, but I feel like I could probably find something close maybe with a few less miles if I sell, but I don't want to pay Hawaii premium for it.

I don't have a quote, but consider it cost $1500 to ship my truck out there... is it worth it? Will it be worth that much more out there?

    any one have an opinion?

Dang that sounds really high, when I left 4 years ago I had a car shipped from there to Dallas and delivered to my dads in fort worth and it ended up being like $1600 and gas was higher back then

Just to put this in perspective.. To ship my truck to Alaska it is roughly 2500 bucks---on the road.
It will cost more than 1500, I am thinking a good 3000.

In my case, it is cheaper to drive my truck

i've cruised this site for over a year now and maybe someone with more knowledge will chime in BUT if its paid for then i would ship it, everything i read tacos out there are over priced and getting parts is costly, hell one dude said he got a shitty beater for what i could get a 10 yr old truck with almost 300k on it and people here still want $3500 or more depending on what it is...from the looks of your truck you would almost pay full price out that way for the same one you have now, from my understanding it'll be worth way more there than it would be most places in the states...i say keep and ship

Edit: i have Zero experience in any of this just an opinion based off what i've read in the past on this site..good luck and nice truck man

I will most likely be coming out of pocket to ship, but as you said, I feel like it would still be worth it not to have to look for another and end up with something in not as good of shape for more money... if it seems like its gonna be a wash buying there or shipping I will probably just keep and ship

Keep your truck, you will have a hard time finding one in the same condition without paying a premium for it. It is getting even harder to find, since people have them paid off and will just run them to the ground. Some nice prerunners come up for sale now and then, but hardly any 4 bys

From the sounds of prices I would say ship it, then sell it there and profit!

Get a quote for shipping. Then make your decision. Report the price back here; I’m curious.

I have a hard time believing that you can buy a truck here, ship it to the island and make money. If that were true there would be an existing “carry trade”.

How does the military handle private vehicles? Do they move private cars and trucks?

One other thought. There is a Hawaii Region Group on TW. Post there and see if they have an opinion.

Normally I would agree, but I have played that game many times, and in this case yes I make profit but for what to use the cash and end up in a shittier truck then what I already have lol

They will ship one vehicle for each member of the military. Meaning if you married mil to mil they ship 2 and if your not " me" they shop 1 so since my wife's Tahoe is our nicest vehicle I was gonna Have them ship it instead of my truck.

Also I like the idea about posting in the Hawaii section and I did that. Your reading it :D

San Diego/LA or Seattle to Honolulu is somewhere in the 1500 ballpark. I would definitely ship it here, possibly turn a profit selling it here later

Buddy of mine shipped his GMC Yukon XL from LA to Honolulu through Matson about a year ago, and the cost was about $800. Price of fuel did go up since then, so I'm sure prices have increased now. But if you're not looking for "guaranteed availability" service where you expect the vehicle to arrive at a specific date/time, it shouldn't be too bad. Definitely better than taking a chance at a used truck out here.

If you like your truck, I'd say bring it. 4x4 Tacoma in good condition are difficult to find, and any stealership will charge a ridiculous premium.

Back in Jun 2016, when I was in the market to buy my 2.5 gen 4x4, they were asking over $40K for a bone stock 2014 or 2015, 2.5 gen 4x4 Tacoma DCSB. I told them I could buy a brand new 3rd gen for cheaper and they didn't care.

that's about what I figured, I know its will be super hard to find the same thing there, and I do enjoy the heck out of my 1st gen

Flenniken7 I say keep it and ship it out here! You have it already built to how you like it and finding one here that won’t require you giving your right arm with it to get will be hard! A friend of mine shipped her car from Hawaii to Seattle a year ago and it was like $1000.

I would ship it also. Most 1st gens out here are WAY over priced in my opinion but people are getting ridiculous money for their 15-20 year old trucks. My friend bought a 2003 double cab with about 120kmiles about 6 months ago and paid 12k for it. Granted it was in excellent condition, but still...I could have bought a 2nd gen for that price. What can you sell it for where you are at? If you can sell it for a premium also, then may be worth it, but you know your truck so even with the higher mileage, at least you know it’s past.

Also want to mention, when he was searching for the truck, there were a lot of fix and resell guys out there and a lot of them were junk repairs with misleading ads. They do this to Tacoma’s because of the high resale value. He almost gave up after 8 months of searching.

12k doesn't seem tooooo high, relatively low miles and double cab. Was if 4x4?

I think I could reasonably get $7500 here pretty easy, it books for like $8400 Its crazy to me how much theses trucks go for
