Need help picking a new lawn mower gas or electric

Hello all. Not sure if I am posting in the right section.

I'm the market for a new lawn mower. I want y'all feedback on whether I should go gas or electric. I've asked around and have gotten mixed reviews. Some say gas has more power but is a pain to maintain. Some say electric is cleaner but under powered and also have to charge batteries.

I've never owned a lawn mower and have no experience with them. Thanks in advance!!

 

Depends on the size of your lawn, but I would say gas. I've tried electric pressure washer and weed trimmer and found that after about a dozen or so uses, i got fed up with its lack of power. Have since replaced both with gas. I see that you live in so cal so you may never have to deal with a damp lawn, in which case, gas all the way. Also, don't cheap out and get one with a good motor.

 

Yeah it depends really on your size of yard and how often you will mow/how fast the grass grows.

I imagine that if it’s real small and you keep up with it the electric shouldn’t be too bad.

 

I have a middle of the line gas mower I bought from Home Depot about 8 years ago. All I’ve done is put gas in it and go, changed the air filter, spark plug and oil last year. It sat for over two years without being used and fired right up and worked fine. Each winter it sits for about six months for while the ground is snow covered and starts right up each spring.

 

Gas, we had a few electric mowers years ago and one stayed plugged in which was a real bitch. The other would charge and it sucked also. Go gas, not being a smartass, as far as maintenance have you ever used one? Gas, air filter and change the plug and oil. They are really simple and last a long time

I have a simular one for years and it starts up first pull every time. Even after sitting around for months.

Hey guys thanks again for the advice. I ended up getting a gas Toro. I wanted the Honda but I just can't afford it .

 

A lot of the motors are identical in push mowers. You will be fine with whatever you bought

 

Sorry guys, but I love my EGo. I have the mower, chainsaw, weedwacker, and have the blower inbound.

 

If someone made a good long battery lasting electric riding mower for the price of gas I’d get one.

 

The ryobi riding mower got good reviews. I think it uses motorcycle type batteries so maybe you can change them when they go bad? Looks like a cool go-kart tho if i had a bigger yard, I'd try it.

I’ve seen that but I need a longer batt life and I use mine to pull a little trailer and what not. I need to go buy a golf cart

 

I own the 40v push style Ryobi lawnmower. Does a great job!

 

I second the Honda mower. It has never let me down after +8 years. Starts first pull even after sitting the winter months.

 

After posting in this thread I got to thinking that I have had this mower at least five years. It might be time for a spark plug and a replacement air filter.
I took a look at both over the weekend and they both look like new.

@bullaculla I also have the EGO blower and chainsaw. They are very powerful for electric. I already had the mower though.
My wife would sweep her new flagstone patio every day. I convinced her to give the EGO blower a try and now she uses it instead.
She lets me know when it's time to charge the battery.

 

I just picked up the Ego 21" self propelled, I am extremely impressed with it honestly. I am going to be selling my 2 year old 30" Toro. I am going to really enjoy not having to maintain my mower anymore, or have my kid spill gas everywhere. I have 1/3rd acre and 1 7.5 battery covers it with some battery to spare. I want to sell my 20v dewalt blower now and get the Ego blower so I can have a spare battery as CYA.

 

Hello all. Thanks again for the help. On top of the Toro gas mower, I also bought the Toro 40volt weed wacker, hedger, blower, and chainsaw. Toro electric equipment is pretty good I'm impressed. Thanks yall!

 

Home Depot dropped the price on the EGO trimmers to $150 and $180 ($20 off). I picked up the carbon fiber shaft one today. It has the auto winding head so no more winding up the spool bay hand and carefully inserting it in the head hoping it doesn't unwind and knot up while you are doing it. You just pull a length thru and even it out then push a button and it winds it up. Those prices are with a 2500 battery and charger.
