You'll get no disagreement from me. My better half trains hunting dogs for a living. We've been out looking for crates for her truck. I think she'd have a coronary if I paid over a grand for a couple of dog crates for her truck (She wants to purchase some land with a pond to train on). On the other hand, there are certain benefits to driving her nuts now and again....

I have 2 XL RTK kennels in the back for my malinois (75-80 lbs each). They fit perfectly side by side.

Have a look at transk9usa.com. Lots of double-crate options that are fairly reasonably priced.

I fold the seats down and use two of the packing blankets from hf. One gsd and a gsd/lab mix. Comfortable yet the gsd still wants the front seat!

    Bad attitude. Just sayin...

We crate our dogs in the back seat with the back seat folded down. I can get a large crate in there and 2 50# dogs in the crate. They've been at it since pups. Take em for a run at the dog park every once in a while and they are ready to jump in and out.

Here's the largest crate that fits in the back seat of a dbl cab Taco.

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01HKF4ALW/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If you wanna fit 2 crates and orient them short side forward the next size down I think works that way. This one is pretty big and can fit 2 50# dogs standing up. Crate is oriented long side facing forward in my truck. Has 3 side doors and a top door. Back pack material so it folds down and take 2 minutes to remove and fold the seats back up into position. Been on several long ass trips all day type with dogs in the crate.

The crate could be strapped down but it's a tight fit but not too tight - I've slammed on the brakes (had to) dogs were good. The back seat btm is there to keep everything in the back and in position. The top of the crate is about 3" from the ceiling so crate wont go anywhere.

Ruby Rosie and Anna. Chinese Shar-Pei bitches.

This is my set up. Just an Amazon basics dog hammock and the seats folded down.

I specifically switched from an SUV to a truck so that I can haul my dogs in the bed. Keeps the dog hair out of the cabin, and gives them way more room. I added a cap, a rubber truck mat, and dog pillows. They love it.

^Have you considered something like a
Softopper? I also bought mine with the thought of hauling my pups around in the back. (The largest is my fluffy, droolly, 140lb Great Pyr). I’m not to sure how a fiberglass topper would hold up when I’m hooning about on trails, but the softopper is basically a Jeep roof.

I have some concerns, though. I need to make sure there is plenty of airflow to keep them cool back there in the summer, and enough insulation to keep them warm in the winter.

[NO, I would not hoon around with my dogs in the back. Two different purposes.]

I definitely have, just not a huge fan of the look. Much rather have a fiberglass shell but I suppose it’s better than nothing for now.

I wonder if softoppers have like a mesh side cover, similar to jeeps? It would keep good airflow and my dog from jumping out.

    Wet Okole seat covers.

Mine are a bit worn now, but that is from use, and I am not upset.

I built a wooden platform for the backseat of my access cab. It creates a lot of useable room for him, and is safer off road. Now there’s no crevices for him to get a foot stuck in.

This would be absolutely badass throughout the summer. It wouldn’t be too difficult to add a net over a bed rack.

The hard part is determining which bed rack would be best for supporting a net.

Maybe put a Spiderweb Shade over the top.
