Well its a rainy day so I’m finally getting around to posting this long overdue build thread of mine… if youve ever spent time on an island you’ll understand things get done (or not) at a different pace…

Id like to thank everyone here on the forum for the inspiration and for answering all my questions, no matter how idiotic… but especially to DJB1 who, although weve never met, has helped me through the process with his friendly advice, guidance, and sense of humor…Thanks again for all your 1st gen reg cab love buddy!!

This is my 01 Reg Cab 2.7l Stepside SR5 4x4… a DD used mostly for work and recreation, cross country exploring and getting me to trail heads and fishing holes… I love the less is more simplicity of these little trucks and hope to keep this one going for a good long time…

    As she looks today:
    fullsizeoutput_17c4.jpg

    Interior -
    • Bleaupunkt New Jersey 220 BT Stereo
    • Generic Rubber Floor mats
    Exterior -
    • Softopper
    • Budget Shorty Rubber Antenna (x 2)
    • PlastiDip fading rooftop and fender flares
    Suspension -
    • Poly Steering Rack Bushings - RED!
    • Bilstein 5100/5125
    • OME 880
    • OME Leaf Springs (-3rd leaf)
    • Lower Ball Joints
    Wheels n Tires -
    • Hankook Dynapro ATM 265/70r16
    • Stock Alloy wheels
    • 4Runner 5star wheels
    • GoodYear Authority 235/85r16
    • BFG KO2 235/85r16
    • 16” Steelies
    Engine/Drivetrain - 3RZ- FE 2.7l / 4.30 gears
    • Cleaned Throttle Body
    • K&N Air Filter
    • Spark plugs
    • Fuel filter
    • Changed Gear Oil w/ Redline synthetic
    • F&R Diff
    • Transfer Case
    • Transmission
    • PCV Valve

When I bought her in 2011 with 125k… drove stock for years before I started to make some necessary changes… usually having more time than money this process has been more maintenance than build so far, upgrading only when things break or wear...
    fullsizeoutput_1526.jpg

A few pics of some of the places we’ve been… Tires are 265/70r16 Hankook ATMs… great tires!!

    2011 Yellowstone

    2012 Death Valley

Found me a used Softopper from craigslist.. !!
    fullsizeoutput_257.jpg
    2014 Sadona

I forget when I finally discovered TW but I knew immediately that I needed better suspension… not wanting a lift I went with Bilsteins 5100/5125… I also replaced the steering rack bushings… no more death wobble
    fullsizeoutput_337.jpg
    2014 Joshua Tree

Changed the stereo out when the CD player died… I think it blends well with the interior, sounds great, and bluetooth eliminates the nest of wires I had connecting my music on the long trips…
    fullsizeoutput_1776.jpg

Plastidip solved my peeling roof problem on the cheap and it will be easy to remove if I ever pony up for a proper paint job
    fullsizeoutput_1778.jpg

    fullsizeoutput_1749.jpg
    fullsizeoutput_1701.jpg

… I also hit my fenders while I was in the mood
fullsizeoutput_1252.jpgNever really dug the stock tacoma alloys and since SCS F5s are still above my pay grade I found a set of 4runner 5stars to put on… unfortunately they came without the center caps so I had to get some cheap knockoffs…

This is where things start to get interesting..

Went OCD researching for my next set of tires.. ended up with GY authority 235/85r16s simply because my local wallyworld was giving them away for $45/each… heavier than I wanted, but I’m a sucker for a good deal..!!fullsizeoutput_1728.jpg
    fullsizeoutput_17be.jpg

Always liked the steelies so ordered a set of RTX aftermarkets then sold my old rims and tires and broke even on it all…!!fullsizeoutput_1722.jpg

A couple pics with the new wheels and tires before liftfullsizeoutput_17a6.jpg fullsizeoutput_1612.jpg

My stock suspension at 165k was showing its age... so it was time for another upgrade!!!

    IMG_20170116_162032016_HDR.jpg

I went with Bilsteins 5100/5125.. 5100s set to zero... OME 880 coils up front and OME leaf springs for the rear and removed the 3rd leaf from the bottom (which also helps soften the ride)… and some new lower ball joints to put on while I was at it…

It’s about time you started a build thread and posted some photos. Your unicorn stepside 4WD regular cab looks mean as hell!

Thanks man.... its not a hard core radical build but it fits my needs perfectly... looking back shes basically the benign bastard child of your build, jacobrippey, and Jiveydude... so i thought it was time to give back and maybe this will help somone else down the road

Just got around to changing the PCV valve... and even though the old one still sounded good when i pulled it, changing it out made a surprising difference... the engine is now purring along and idling smooth as could be...

Love the build! Looking to run the 235/85r16 tire size but haven't found any wheels the caught my eye except yours. Do you like the wheels?

Thanks...love the wheels.... My only complaint would be they’re heavier than claimed... but not by much and still lighter than stock steelies.. I think they work/look great with this size tire

Hey Ritchie... thanks for the support!!! You have a pretty sweet ride yourself!!! funny thing is, if I had my choice I would have gone silver... I like the contrast with all the black bits... but buying used it was just a simple twist of fate

Do you need the acorn style lug nuts for steel wheels?

Yes.. the steelies are not hub centric... the stock lugs will work temporarily as with the spare... theyre semi-beveled... but not recommended for long term use from what ive read

These are what i have on...

Gorilla Automotive 21134HT Acorn Style Lug Nut – 12-Millimeter by 1.50 Thread Size – Pack of 24 .

Nice set up! I like that cot. Looks like it fit perfectly in there. Also, cool idea with the lighting as well
