Disable rear diff lock

The other day my rear diff lock would not disengage. After a little messing with it and turning the steering wheel it finally did disengage. This brought a thought to mind; if I was in the middle of nowhere and it failed in the locked in position how could I disable it? If I remove the power (if it isn't a mechanical problem) would it disengage? Is there a fuse or can I unplug it? Does it need power to ENgage? Also what would happen if I accidently pushed the engage button when I was going down the highway? Is there an interlock to prevent that from happening?

 

well it wont lock up if you have a 4wd and ur goin down the road til you throw it in 4 low from what ive heard. i have an 07 tacoma and mines hung up engaged b4 while i was workin on the electrical side of it in the cab. the only way i got it to disengage was to get under the truck and unplug it. i fiddled with it for several minutes b4 i finally just unplugged the electrical connection on top of the locker. that did it for me....... i dunno if it would work again tho.............

 

yep i got mine modded tooo thats when it locked up and wouldnt unlock...... i finally got the schematics rite on my relay and it worked fine................

 

I don't have a 4WD. The light switch is located right next to the rear diff lock switch. I just I hope I don't accidently hit the wrong one. It would be nice to have a cover that you have to flip up to have access to it.

There shouldn't be any ill affects from driving with it engaged. Back in the day I drove my chevelle like that 24/7 They put those stupid speed limits on there to cover there asses. The only time having your rear locked is a problem is on a hard turn. The inside tire wants to rotate faster that the outer, rough on your tires if you don't take it easy.

My truck is a 2wd Prerunner. I read in the book that you should not go over 5 mph with it engaged. What if I was going down the road at 60 mph and I decided to turn on my lights that are operated by the switch next to the rear diff lock and accidently pushed it instead of the light switch?
