Bought a boat a few days ago and towed it from Olathe to nkc. 3600 lbs wet seemed a bit taxing on the truck. Anyone else do any hauling or have tips or tricks?

I tow a 2800 lb boat with my 2.7l. Usually go from nkc to Perry or recently, Smithville. Towing usually involves plotting out a route on Google maps to avoid congested areas like downtown. Also I don't use fifth gear and realize that I'm not going anywhere fast

How long have you been towing it? And have you had any issues? I've been told the carrier bearing in these trucks are a bit on the weak side. I'd hate to have to find out the hard way.

I too just bought a boat. From what I can find the boat weighs 1750lb + single axle trailer + all the crap you load in the boat. I have a 2nd Gen 4.0 and it does OK but I can tell it doesn't really like it. I take the boat out of the water in 4x4. I too am curious of any tips/tricks/advice.

There years now without issues. Mine is a reg cab so I can't speak on the carrier bearing issue. Also make sure you double your stopping distance

What tires are you using to launch?

I found out about the stopping distance really, really quickly. I pooped a bit then took it easy the rest of the route.

I have BFG ko2 and hardly ever have to use 4wd to launch/recover.
I over thought everything about towing but as long as you drive slow and cautious you're fine. If you're curious about exact weight they have CAT scales at some QT's

No attitude needed, Clearwater. But I appreciate and despise that link. I understand what the author is saying, but now I don't even want to haul anything over the size of a single wave runner. I understand shit breaks. It happens. But towing 3500 lbs one or twice a week in the summer really damage the longevity of the truck?

Have you had any problems with weather rot or splitting between tread on bfg?

I am running federal couragia Mt 265/75/16. Lots of grip. But we have some pretty steep launches here at lake Oroville in California. That's why I recover using 4x4

Not at all. As long as the trans is kept in good order. Recommend a monitor that pulls from the OBDII port. Several out there, like ScangaugeII

Trailer brakes are a great bonus for safety.

I used to run federal on my drift car, had no idea they made truck tires. How many miles have you ran them and how to they perform for daily driving? Also, how much weight is your boat and trailer?

Trans is kept in good order as in? Flush it after every towing season? To my understanding you don't want to be in od while trailering that much weight. And what exactly is it monitoring? Trans Temps?

Don't tow in overdrive and it should do just fine.

"should." That's the part that is starting to freak me out. I'm definitely not a lucky guy, so riding on that isn't going to do it for me. Does anyone think the trans cooler is sufficient for that kind of weight?

No. Unless its time. Frequent drain/fills (25k?) Should generally keep things fresh.

    Correct.

Yes. Cooking the fluid is the thing to 1) avoid if possible 2) service the unit immediately if you do

This isnt a high risk venture at this weight with a bit of caution used. But staying on top of things is key. Just like it was for your drift car and is for your boat.

I really do appreciate you, and everyone else's input. As far as the drift car goes, I was purposely beating the shit out of it. This is a lot different. I'm known for doing my research on anything and everything before making a purchase. The wife wanted a boat, and I skipped my typical MO. I can't blame anyone but myself. Between the learning curve of towing, driving and servicing a boat, and the required maintenence from said towing, I am at wits end.

No problems with the tires. They have 40k on them and are probably less than half their lifespan
