In Massachusetts, there are two ways limits are set. All info is here https://www.massdot.state.ma.us/Por...imits/Procedures_for_Speed_Zoning_02-2017.pdf But, basically:

    • If a speed limit sign exists, there has to be a speed study to back it under 90/18. The speed study basically looks at how fast traffic goes on the road along with some other things like gradients, crash history, etc. Engineers will also drive the road themselves at various speeds. In general, they take the 85th percentile speed and round up to the nearest 5. They will sometimes adjust down slightly for things like crash history, but never more than 7 MPH below the 85th percentile speed. For instance, if traffic moves at 56 MPH and the road has a high rate of crashes, they could set the limit at 50, but no lower (56 MPH - 7 MPH = 49 MPH, rounded up to 50). The thought behind this is 85% of people drive at a reasonable speed on their own.
    • If a speed limit sign does not exist, the road is considered prima facie under 90/17. In MA, that basically means 30 MPH if thickly settled, 40 MPH rural, 50 MPH if divided. There is a more recent law that towns can make neighborhoods 25 MPH without a speed study, but only if no other speed study exists and the road meets the "thickly settled" definition. MassDOT discourages doing this on a case-by-case basis.
    • There are some exceptions, for instance the Turnpike Authority has control over I-90 and there's a law on the books saying it's 65 MPH (90/17A).

Getting illegal signs removed or corrected isn't too difficult. I've done that several times. Getting a citation thrown out is even possible on roads that are technically legal, if you can prove the limit wasn't properly set and the clerk magistrate likes your reasoning. Getting a new speed study done is trickier. Towns have control over most of their own roads, and MassDOT doesn't have the resources to step in when they're not being reasonable. MassDOT general counsel has told me that it is their view that towns accept liability for improperly posted or zoned roads. If the town does request a study, MassDOT does it for them and the selectboard or city council signs off. Then the signs go up. Your best bet for a new speed study is on a minor highway under the control of the state.

I just did mine about a week ago. Great so far! My truck is leased also, but I'll be buying in December

Afternoon all. Was a nice morning out on the Cape! Traffic wasn't too bad on 495 other than the usual break check near 84. Had my fill of fried oysters last night at Brax Landing out in Harwichport. Delicious!

Was looking at buying one of these myself. Would be great for my property but I’m not sure if I’ll use its capabilities as often as I think

I only have about an acre and a half, my brother in law has just over 10. He mows and plows with it. I definitely couldn’t justify buying one for my small lot but will be better than renting a bobcat for $300/day or paying someone to clear the area for me.
He has the backhoe attachment too but it wasn’t going to fit on the trailer.

Hopefully everyone had a great Sunday! Went out on the dual sport to go on some trails, and of course, some street driving. It was a beautiful day out today.
I want to like your post, but I can't stand how much pollen there is either .

Ya I have about 2 acres but hauling firewood around and mulch and I want to dig out and clear an area on the edge of my woods plus lay a gravel pad for my trailer and stuff. Plus I’d use it to plow in the winter

That's next on the list but they're covered in dirt right now. I also need to do my skids and rear bumper when that comes in

This was the first ride for me on my dual sport this year! It felt nice to go off-road. If you ever have time, and want to ride around northern RI, just let me know.

Will do, I wouldn't mind a day of dual sporting! My project is nutty now, when things calm down, I'll shoot you a message.

    Fucking hectic day today.

Woke up at 8 and went to my usual pick up soccer game at 9. Bolted out of there promptly at 10 to go meet the wife and kids by 10:30 at the Portuguese Day Parade in Danbury. Watched the parade, ran home to clean up the house a bit. Then went to my parents for lunch. Followed by meeting someone who the wife was selling something to on Facebook. Then went to my in-laws so we could go to the Portuguese Club for the outdoor party. Hung out for a while, oldest played some of the outdoor games they had. Watched traditional Portuguese folklore dancing for a bit, and back to the in-laws for dinner around 7. Ate, came home around 8:30, and put the kids to bed. Oldest fell asleep quick. Wife fell asleep with the youngest. Did a bit of work, cleaned up the kitchen, got my lunch ready for the day. Got my clothes out for tomorrow. Then finally got a chance to take a break, enjoy a good craft beer, while playing with this streaming TV service I'm trying out (xstreamingtv). Really liking this Charter Spectrum cable internet. Super fast and it shows on the streaming TV since it doesn't freeze one bit.

Going to finish up the beer and then likely going to bed. Not sure what the wife is doing since I'm downstairs. Oh well. Every man/woman for him/herself
