I paved driveways for a couple summers in college and did a bunch of crack filling and seal coating. If he’s offering to redo it for free, I’d take him up on it. There’s a decent chance if it got rained on immediately after getting out down it will not last nearly as long even if it dries out and looks okay in the short run.

Fully dry now ,some areas look a little funky so he has agreed to doing it again . We just need a dry spell when he does . I told him it was going to rain about 8-10 hours after he finished according to weather .com but he said it was not . It rained lightly 3 times as soon as he left . Then that night it rained pretty good and all morning the next day . Has not been hot since he did it !

I actually checked online after you first posted because I was curious... Ideal recoating is to squeegee first and then spray to fix any inconsistencies. I'd ask him to spray this second coat for you.

I’m fixing up our place to sell. I have about 17 doors in the house. Approx 12 are original dingy antique brass. The others have been changed out to oil rubbed bronze. Any thoughts on spray painting the old doorknobs? It’ll be a small fortune to replace it all.

I would grab some brasso or similar and polish the original stuff. Probably take a few more minutes than painting, but not much. If it is the really old style, chuck up the square spindle that the doorknob connects to in a drill with the doorknob fastened on the opposite side and you can just hold a rag with polish and finish it in 30 seconds. The escutcheon plates take a little more effort.

I am also a fan of the rustoleum industrial paint in a spray can (lowes or depot).. limited colors, but I use the 'Stainless Steel' color on big cast iron radiators when I rehab my apartments (also did it at my house because it comes out great). Dries super quick, unlike most of the other lines rustoleum makes.

They’re lever type so will take longer than a round knob but still appreciate the input

Started to prep my baby momma's garage for paint. Used a 'paint shaver' for the first time; it definitely takes some practice and a bit of finesse to keep it from chewing up the shakes. We are both RRP certified since we own rentals and like to follow the rules the best we can, so we put down plastic and followed some basic RRP rules to contain any lead paint dust/chips. Skimped a bit on the PPE, but we've got masks and glasses, a dedicated wipe down area, clean clothes and footwear to put on so we don't track lead dust back in the house.

I did a test area first, and after getting sanded with my Festool ets eq125 the shakes come out looking brand new. I might treat myself to a Festool RO90 tomorrow for some of the details since I have to go to the paint store anyway...

Per RRP.. Festool hooked up to a festool hepa vac, and paint shaver hooked up to a 'dustless' brand hepa vac. Both work great and have served us well on many projects.

Got on my garage door insulation project finally. I have three doors, and two are under bedrooms. Besides how hot the garage gets, it goes right up to the bedrooms, too.

In my region, the main goal is to keep the heat out, so I looked at the many insulation option available to primarily address that.

    Other issues to consider:
    1. Added weight. Door springs are tensioned to balance and lift a specific weight. If you add too much weight, the spring will need to be adjusted
    2. Security of the material in the panels when the door is open and overhead, so it doesn't fall out/off.

The doors are original (1986), and have some irregularities, and some big ass deep flanges on most panels. The had also been painted by some dumbshit at some point who apparently didn't not bother to even wipe off the cobwebs, let alone wash the doors, before painting. This made the prospect of using double-sided adhesive a dubious chore.

Not taking a shit ton of time is also an important criterion for me.

Reflectix seemed the most economical and workable solution. In this application, it requires an air gap to avoid conductive heat from the panels. Hmmmmm. I had seen some people use cardboard strips. Seemed like a PITA and time consuming. Also, the raised, stamped panels created irregular depth that was a challenge for any material. Then I was staring at a piece of pipe insulation I had just used for another project. A-fucking-ha! At $1.25 a stick and cutting like butter, very easy and cheap, and an insulator to boot!

All these materials can be mashed around and bent to fit inside the panel flanges around the perimeters, and they also conform to irregularities quite handily.

My first experiment indicated that 3 vertical pipe insulation "battens" would not be sufficient to keep the Reflectix uniformly away from the exterior panel and tight against the interior flanges, and would look sloppy. So on the big panels, I went up to 5. But they were very good at locking in the material.

The upper example was my second one, and I cut slots along the edges of the Reflectix to ease it past the bolts protruding for hinge hardware. Getting the first edge stuffed in square and tight under the flange is the hardest part, and after that, the rest of the panel is cake.

Watched my uncles house burn down in Kapoho Hawaii today... doesnt exactly count as DIY I guess. I feel so terrible for everyone losing their home to the lava flows. It's not exactly unexpected with the absolute scale of this eruption, but doesn't suck any less.

It was a very beautiful property with quite literally a million dollar view. Gone forever now. The entire Kapoho bay will probably be filled with lava by the time it's done.

We had insulated garage doors at my last place and they made a hell of a difference. Good job on the poor-man's alternative. @GHOST SHIP used 3/4" or 1" on his if I'm not mistaken.
