My guess is this has probably been hashed to death, and guessing a number of you went through the same thing, but not finding the thread (for '18 models anyway). I'm really back and forth on this. Honestly, it will mostly pull daily driver duties. However, there will be times it's called upon to do other things (pull boat, some Baja abuse, etc.). The Pro really seems like the right rig for me, and I'm close to pulling the trigger on one (well, put the deposit on one as it's in route). Then again, I'd like a moon roof, perhaps some finer appointments and Bilsteins are nothing to sneeze at. Plus, some better color options with the OR (Cement and Quicksand, for example). I dunno. So for those that have the '18 OR or Pro, if you don't mind, would you share your thoughts now ? Sort of a shoulda, woulda, coulda got the Pro (Or owners) or the OR (Pro owners) or no regrets? If you are patting yourself on the back for your decision because you got one over the other, or you're crying in your beer, because of your choice, I'd like to hear about it. Thank you!!

There isn’t anything significantly better or different about the pro vs the Or. Drive both, buy the one you like most.

For the record, I got mone For 15k less than a pro...and wasn’t paying 15k for a grill and a 1 inch lift.

I’m very happy with my OR

There are several differences between the two models. I'm sure the complete list has been enumerated on TW more than a few times. Compare the specs and prices of a comparably optioned OR vs the Pro and see what is important to you. I don't think you'll be disappointed with either. You'll get a better discount off MSRP on the OR than the Pro but I got my Pro for under MSRP while some locales are asking over that on Pros. Also consider which mods you are planning to do, if any.

Thanks. I know the differences on paper, just looking for that, well, gut feeling. Mods, not many. I have other projects that eat up my ever shrinking slush fund. Suspect that pushes me towards the Pro (I'm not about to drop 3.5 or whatever for a BDS/Fox kit, for example, etc.) Anyway, I suppose only I can answer my question, but again, I just can't decide. Probably throw the money down on the Pro in the AM and call it good. Thanks for letting me play through.

I love my OR. There were only 2 reasons why I didn't buy a Pro

    1. No moon roof
    2. Wanted MGM
Because you can add all of the upgrades of a Pro to an OR, and you can't practically change the color or add a moon roof to a Pro, I chose the OR.

So far I've added a ton of pro features to my OR, including suspension, fogs, skids, shift knob, CIA, scoop and more. Be forewarned... it'll cost you.

Biggest upside to the Pro, in my opinion, is the insane resale value. I constantly see used Pros being listed for more money than MSRP. Doesn't mean that they're selling, but it's worth noting all the ssme.

I’d probably would have gotten a pro if I could have gotten the sunroof. The biggest thing I wanted was the 6MT, the rest was just nice to haves.

My motto has always been buy what you love and love what you buy! Three reasons why I didn’t buy a Pro last year: 6 foot box, moon roof and black.

No offense to those who did but I was not going to spend 50K on a tacoma, especially when I didn't like the wheels. I would have gone for the white but dealer would not budge on the 5K Market adjustment. Bought the OR premium for 38, added heritage grille, skid, BFGs and Level 3 Fox kit (on the way). Gave me what I wanted for 7-10K less.

Love my OR... may upgrade suspension at SOME point but for my needs the stock bilsteins have held up pretty well and I don't want a sunroof taking up precious headroom (which there already isn't an abundance of in this truck).

The Pros are nice though so if you're set on it, do it. No hating on getting the truck you want. But in general I think the best advice is that if you plan to do a lot of modification, can be better to go OR and then invest the money you saved vs. the Pro to do your upgrades.

In my case I looked at the Pro, but even with that price tag I knew I would have to spend another 6-7k+ in upgrades to get it outfitted for my needs (lots of racks, steps, seat covers, rolling tonneau, etc.,) which is a lot of outdoor sports/camping/etc.,

In the end I spent nearly what a Pro would have cost me new but I have a truck that perfectly suits my needs. I can carry 6-8 kayaks, bikes galore, camping gear, and still have my bed for lockable waterproof storage with easy access to my roof at all times.

It's all about your personal needs - figure out what you really care about and let that drive your decision! Good luck

I could not justify the upcharge of a Pro for just the bolt ons. The OR is the best value and you are likely going to customize it anyway.

Thanks folks. Pretty sure I'll go Pro. I always want a sunroof, but in reality, I almost never use them (about the only exception is to keep an eye on loads on my roof rack, but don't have one on my Ram and, it seems upon reflection, I haven't missed it in the least). Having an 11.5' bed on my Ram, I'm looking forward to having something with just a 5' bed (it's gonna be like driving a Smart Car in comparison). Well, that's the plan this AM (always subject to change). Thanks again folks.

I’m very happy I did the smart thing and bought an TRDOR rather than a pro.

These two statements don't really seem to square up with each other. If it's mostly going to be a daily driver with limited use to goof off in and pull a boat... I'm not sure how a pro is a better option than the OR.

If it's really about aesthetics, or some kind of feeling that you want the most baller truck available... get the pro. My guess is if you get the OR and see a Pro you might have a ping of regret... but if you get the Pro and see an OR that potential for regret is less.

I'm very happy with my OR and for the money it definitely seems to be best bang for buck... Awesome deals can be had on an OR too if patient and shop around compared to a Pro.

Have OR. Pro brings exclusivity, not value, so I passed on that .

I'm running a 2nd gen, but same concept...

Back then there was the TX Baja and TRD OR. I went with an OR and pieced mine together using a bilstein 6112 / 5160 combo nearly identical to the TX Baja, then threw on some TX Pro wheels (same used on the TRD Pro in 2015, custom "TOYOTA" grill... basically made myself a 2013 TRD Pro (which didn't exist until 2015). Only thing I don't have is the TRD exhaust, which I had before on a different truck and it sounded terrible.... not nearly loud enough to be mean, just sounded like a failing muffler lol

So basically yeah, you can do it yourself. It took me ~$1,400 in suspension work, $350 for the custom grill, $150 to color match the rear bumper, and I didn't bother with the hood scoop, tinted lights or TRD exhaust.

Best part about it is that I got it all on a color they NEVER offered as a Baja or TRD Pro... Spruce Mica.

I'm very much a big fan of going the route of a TRD OR and make it your own.

That's a good point. I didn't even bring up price. Mine was used, so it's hard to really compare, but a TRD Pro in 2015 was easily $41-45k. Mine was $27k used, probably $33k new. Even taking the new price, it cost way less to modify mine compared to getting a Pro.

With that being said... I'm done with these Tacomas. Not much payload or towing for the price we pay. I'll probably be into a deeply discounted full-size next. These trucks are so much more capable and comfortable for taller people. 4th of July or Labor Day and you could honestly pick up something like this for close to $34k. I know this seems like a bit of a tangent, but I really wish someone sat me down 4 years ago and said "why not spend $10k more for a v8-powered BRAND NEW full size truck that you won't outgrow in 4 years, instead of the 33k mile used Tacoma?"

With new RAM and GM trucks hitting the market the old inventory is going to be going stupidly cheap this year.
