This thread almost looks dead, but I figured y'all would get the notifications anyways.

I'm looking to get a couple starter hard-tails for my wife and I (Kona Lana'i) from a shop I'm affiliated with for ~$200/each. I've got a topper to carry gear and my pups, so I'm looking towards a hitch rack. Any possible suggestions on some? I really dont need the end stuff.

I don't run a topper so I don't own one but the Saris seems like the best one I've been exposed to.

Do you pull a lot of brake in BMX racing, or DH racing stuff for that matter? :anonymous:

Braking into tight hairpin corners on steep downhills is common enough in the wild, but (pro racers make it seem like) BMX /DH race courses have more flow.
Like they just pick and hold their line, or maybe back off pedaling bit. Perhaps tire-scrub off a little excess speed.

Unless you come off your line I suppose!

I am a BMX racer who moved over to Mtn Biking professional Downhill and Dual Slalom and Expert in Cross Country. In my eyes brakes are your enemy and will kill any momentum and speed you carry into corners. Hell you can crash just for grabbing too much brakes. :bikewhoops:

I raced Cat 1 DH for 5 years....you need your brakes...at the right times especially places like mammoth with the deep pumice.its how you turn, surf the back wheel. You use your brakes more than you think cause u don't think about it concisously.

Modulate your brakes to help scrub corner speed. Grab a handful of brakes to prevent broken bones or a bike.

@ThaiChillyTaco and Basikbiker, thanks for the insights.
As a 'typical weekend warrior', this using and not using actually brakes makes sense.

Basically I see braking as a calamitous waste of hard earned elevation, and thus to be avoided at "all" cost.
Especially when I could have carried through, but for poor line choice and/or lack of "belief".
    Skill matters.

OTOH feathering a rear brake helps rein me back on my line when I'm tracking too far to the outside corner.
I have to modulate the front when my "body won't lean in anymore" or front tire threatens to break traction.
I will get low, stiffen up and grab a paw full here and there because some of the single track is/was hiking trail switchbacks. Haven't savvied how to carry speed thru a 180 hairpin other than waiting longer in the 'wait, wait, wait, waiBRAKE!!-crankcrankcrank' game

Actually I'll brake because I get going too fast on some spots and exceed my risk/skill assessment threshhold. Which is why I don't race!

My 30yo Schwinn XS Pro has original wheels that the chrome is peeled off them. Any suggestions for a cost effective replacements that would see 1/4 of the abuse they received back late ‘90s early 2000s.
