I was just on that road this weekend, was a little disappointed by this. A buddy I was with said the closure happened last year due to erosion event. I didn't go up to check it out, so I can't confirm.

I hiked (since it's still closed to motorized traffic) part of Devil's Canyon in Clear Creek County over the weekend. It's dry... no signs of snow and the couple of mud puddles had damp dirt visible and that was it. Last year when I drove it after the mid-June opening, there was still snow on the trail in spots.

Two trees need to be cleared and they could open that thing now.

sweet spot! camping allowed up there?

did you guys go up jqs trail or take the long way up? seems like jqs would be a fun route up if it is wide enough for our trucks

as mentioned...alpine loop would be a good area to check out.. could even head over to stony pass and lily lake if they're open. or see if schofield is open yet. cottonwood pass is closed for the summer and tincup is not open, so you can't easily go buena vista to gunnison offroad yet...

you can explore areas between grand junction and moab... dolores triangle area, tabeguache, sheep creek, rimrocker... you can spend a week or two exploring the many routes in that region

Yup, took JQS up - there was a sign saying it wasn’t recommended for trucks but we had no problems and the local said people drove full size up all the time.

I didn’t see any no camping signs and I think it’s all BLM land so you should be fine. Honestly, that particular spot wouldn’t be good since it wasn’t level but there was plenty of other cool spots.

It usually doesn't open till August. No way it's anywhere close to open.

I went up Rollins Pass last Sunday hoping to make it Yankee Doodle Lake to fish a little bit. Didn't quite make it but was a nice morning nonetheless.

I stooped here and walked up, the road beyond this was still mostly snowed in with another similar drift on the next turn. too dicey for me in my stock truck.

Problem is the shaded north sides of mountains, still get plenty of snow and lack of direct sun doesn’t change much to open early.

Had a great time cruising up Pickle Gulch and Yankee Hill trail with @NaZRaQ along with Dan (Jeep) and Josh (4Runner). First time for me on those trails. Truck performed great crawling up the rocky trails. As you can imagine the trails are very dry and dusty outside of the few water crossings.

I thought the event turned out great. Enough people showed to make four groups to comb the area. The Edge Automotive picked up lunch (Subway) for everyone, which was nice. Plenty of water and trash bags to go around, too. The roll-off dumpster was about half full (maybe more) by 4pm. The illegal shooting area (the area inside of 150 yards away from the road/trail) was a mess, but not as bad as anticipated (we were expecting large trash items used as targets).

It was a day well spent.

Spring Creek w/ @Night Eagle, 1st obstacle gave us trouble, super dug out at the base, both had to winch. Then watched some Jeeple come up it, wtf is wrong with them, more throttle is the only technique they practice. Second Jeeple was directed by his buddy to smash the ever loving shit out of his Jeep on the bypass line. Fun day, that trail really makes you work for it.

    Hey guys!

I have a stock Gen3 and want to take the wife and puppy somewhere to break in the RTT I just added. Look for some fun offroad terrain that won't beat them up as passengers. I used to have an FJ that was lifted and armored and took it up a bunch of trails but I don't have much knowledge of the tamer trails. Any suggestions as to a trail on the easier side that has good camping opportunities and isn't 4 hours away? I've been running google searches but I'm not really finding what I'm looking for that way.

    TIA

Rollins Pass has some really nice spots. Easy trail and close.
