Hi everyone. I should have ordered an Access Cab with my '15 Tacoma - I don't haul passengers - the rear seats in my extended cab are a nuisance and not needed. But the main problem is the bed - it's only 5' and too short for my camping needs. I bought Tacoma after owning 9 Ford Rangers with stick shifts and have no intentions of going back when the new Ranger comes out - it's too big. I'm a retired Ford Motor employee and would get the discount, but they make nothing I want. I am thinking of trading my '15 (only has 13,000+ miles on it!) for a new access cab Tacoma, then want to find a store that makes those carpeted truck bed set-ups with two storage benches/drawers and a platform for sleeping. Anybody know anybody who does that in the Colorado area? I think I found a place in Santee, CA which is 830 miles from me, but it would be worth it to get what I want; I wouldn't mind the drive . Thank you in advance.

Welcome! If it was me, id trade it in for a 15 access cab instead. I personally love the 4.0 and a 6spd manual. Best combo they offered and they have the 6’ bed youre looking for

Thank you! I don't buy used vehicles, so a '15 is out of the question and probably too late for an '18. Are the post-'15 Tacomas the same size as the '15's? I can't get a longer vehicle - stupid garage is too short. I may just stick with the '15 and sleep diagonally in the truck bed - I'm only 5'5", so it's do-able. I hate to trade my truck cause I won't get any money for the expensive shell I bought for it, nor the truck.

Im pretty sure the 16+ tacos are almost the same dimensions as the gen 2 trucks, but the bedsides are an inch taller on the third gens. Its definitely doable to sleep diagonally in the bed if you arent over 6ft tall. My buddy @redtaco512 sleeps in the back of his and he has a 5ft bed like you. He opted for a tent setup that allows you to leave down the tailgate for an extra foot of space. Maybe he will chime in on how he likes his setup! Looks like a nice option to me though!

I have the double cab short bed and am 6'3" and use this tent https://www.amazon.com/Mid-Size-SUV-Camper-Tent/dp/B00BYA10F4

I have tested it in the rain and this past weekend it was super windy on the beach with sand/sea spray and held up beautifully. Been very pleased with my sleeping arrangements so far. I was certain i would have to do a ground tent or roof top tent in order to sleep comfortably but stumbled across the DAC tent that I have now. I put a full size blow up mattress in the back and it works great. Hope this helps.

    Also, hey @rjbiii

i haven't figured out how to reply to individuals on here yet, but will comment on tents and bed extensions: I own 2 really nice ground tents. I pitch one of them and throw all my cargo in to get it out of my truck bed sleeping area. I'm not to fond of sleeping in the tent because storms have come up way too often, or maybe it's windy. A nice truck is far better for a good night's sleep. Like some of you have suggested, I should be very comfortable at 5'5" sleeping diagonally. I'm just going to use all the padded stuff I have, including a large, very thick pad I got at L. L. Bean. Should be fine. No matter what, anything is better than staying at a hotel. I've been camping since 1971. It's the best way to travel.

Employee pricing is sweet. If you get “A” plan pricing, I’d wait for the new Ranger. It’s actually slightly smaller than the Tacoma. An inch narrower...forget the length but I remember it being slightly shorter as well. You’d be able to test drive both and see which one you like best.

Your ‘15 is a great truck and has no miles on it. You’ll have no problem finding a buyer and getting a good price for it.

I thought the Ranger was going to be bigger - I sure hope you're right. Tacoma has great durability and a top-notch reputation, but I'd really like to get back to Ford (all my engineer friends gave me the business for going outside Ford, but I was mad at the time). I will wait. Every time I look at that Tacoma in my garage, I wonder why I'm even thinking of changing trucks at all, but, like you said, the A-plan sweetens the process, and I'd like to order one to my exact specs. I bought the '15 off the dealer lot. Thanks for your comments!

That's a cool setup. I talked about this in another post - before I figured out how to reply to individuals - it's been a while since I've been on a forum, so forgot how to do it. For now, I'll just wing it with the equipment I have. Thanks for the input and happy camping this summer.

I had two Rangers. An ‘00 and the ‘03 which I drove for 13 flawless years and traded in for my ‘16 Taco. Loved both Rangers. Also, love my Taco and don’t know if I could part with it...but seeing the Ranger again??? But I love my Taco...

lol - I know - it's a draw with these trucks. I had 9 Rangers - bought a few, leased a few. I started with an '86. They were all sticks except the '11 which I bought off the lot just before Ford killed production of them - I didn't know they were going to discontinue them, so I took what was left - and it was an automatic on the column - I hated it. Also came without a cruise, so they paid for an after-market one, but never liked it, so that's why I decided to get the Tacoma. But I've enjoyed this truck. Somebody will get a good one if I sell it.
