    New member here.

My Mom let her 1999 Tacoma sit for 4-5 years without starting it. I had no idea she wasn't running the truck. It has 204,000 miles on it.

I was wanting to buy it from her and now I'm not sure if it's ruined. Worst case scenario, what all would have to be replaced on the truck? Is it even worth messing with?

    Thanks

I appreciate your response. I'm getting so many different opinions. One mechanic told me the truck was ruined.

Drain the gas/fuel system. Hope the gas has not turned to jelly.

Id check the fluids , jump the battery and let it run. After it ran change all fluids and go over the whole truck.

Definitely not ruined... is it a 4cylinder or 6?
Siphone the tank fill with fresh gas and some star tron to get any other moisture out. Check radiotor fluid as well then new battery and start her up. If she starts I’d do an oil change immediately like that day not next week. The only thing that really goes back is rubber components.. gaskets seals/belts. If it’s a 4cyl you have a timing chain not a timing belt so you’re good their if she ain’t leaking ride her hard

I have no doubts that it will start, but personally I would pull the plugs and put some oil in each cylinder and let it sit overnight. Meanwhile checking air box for a nest and Siphoning out old gas with new using an additive for moisture.

I'll try to answer everyone's questions.

She stopped driving it because she has another an 05 tacoma and the steering went out on the 99.

The 99 is a 6 cylinder. It's located in DFW.

I was hoping I could drain the gas, change all fluids, replace the battery, fix the steering issue, and then have a good little truck.

Steering out probably means power steering. You can still drive it with power steering out.

I think you covered it well -- drain all fluids (gas, coolant, oil, tranny, tcase, diff) and refill, change battery, and drive it.

Only if it was in a flood...if its just been sitting doubtful and would be a good truck.

sounds like you got a handle on it...check for mice/rat nest in the engine and if they chewed on wires etc.

with new gas, oil and battery it should fire right up IMO. also change the fuel filter.

Drain the fuel and put some fresh fuel in. Clean the efi too. Fire it up. I’d also do an oil change ASAP but make sure it runs first

It might be a rough start till the fresh fuel gets through the lines...
