So basically the day after I SAS the OGT. LOL.

You know it's too bad you can't rent a truck for stuff like that. You might have to get one of those Dodge Eco Diesels to drag that much weight comfortably...unless you want to get into the 3/4 Ton range and stay with the gas engine option. I used to love diesel trucks...until I found out it takes 4 gallons of oil to change the oil and you have to lift the cab off to do so much as minor surgery to the engine. Only way they make sense economically is if you're pulling something heavy long distances all the time.

Now if you could rent one...a nice plush 4 door diesel dually with a big gooseneck trailer you could fit more than one truck on so you and a buddy could head up together and trade off driving and split the rental cost with. That would be perfect. Then you wouldn't need to have that second truck sitting around taking up space, costing you maintenance. The rental might cost a lot especially if there's a mileage surcharge, considering the cost to maintain the things but it'd be cheaper than 5 years of car payments.

Todd pulls his around with a f150 so I figure a chevy 1500 should do it or get a 2500

Todd's truck is way lighter than yours is going to be. Todd also said he could definitely tell it was back there when he pulled Frank's truck to Lakeland for the motor swap. I might have misinterpreted that, thinking he meant it was a bit of a strain on his truck with some pucker factor involved, and yours is gonna weigh a hell of a lot more than Frank's when you get done with. Probably somewhere in the 6-7k lb range. Plus another 1800 lbs of trailer or more (that's what Todd's trailer weighs and I don't think your truck would fit on it unless the fenders were modified to be drive-overs (they had to borrow my spare for the T4R and Frank's factory spare to get his truck between the fenders and my truck barely fits between the fenders). That's gonna be at least very close to 10K lbs, especially with the truck loaded down with gear and supplies for the trip. The Dodge 1500 Eco-diesel will probably be able to handle that without too much strain, but I don't think a Ford or Chevy 1/2 ton is going to do it comfortably over long distances, especially if it involves going up and down steep grades in the mountains.

Just saying, do you're research. If 10K or whatever you come up with after weighing the truck and trailer is at the upper end of what the tow vehicle can handle, you might need to step up to a 3/4 ton or you're just asking for issues like overheated brakes, trannies, engines, and probably a host of other premature wear conditions. I'm a Ford guy (after Toyota of course), so me recommending the Dodge Eco-Diesel is based on experience my uncle related to me about trailering with his buddy's Eco-Diesel, so I don't do so lightly. I'd stay away from the bigger diesels though for reasons previously stated. They might tow better and get better fuel economy while doing so, but you'll be paying back anything you gain every time you change your oil or have to put DEF in it.

Edit: My uncle's trailer is pretty much just an older more beat up version of @allenfab 's and you can see how close to the edges I am. With full width axles, you'd definitely be hanging over.

    IMG_20160520_111341224_HDR.jpg

Now, my uncle's truck is an F250 with a Powerstroke and it pulled that trailer to Lakeland like there was nothing even behind it, but I wouldn't want to have to pay to maintain it, haha.

Both actually, they need tunes straight from the factory.

Idk how much you wanna spend but you can find 7.3 powerstrokes for 10-12k all day. Idk if you’ve used diesel to pull anything before, that is definitely the way to go.

Note the picture above. That was an F250 with a powerstroke. Not sure which one (probably a 6.9L), but like I said, it pulled the OGT to Lakeland like there was nothing behind it. Rode like shit though. My uncle needs to get better shocks on it or something. My '96 F250 supercab SWB 4WD rode like a Cadillac. It was just a 7.5L (460cid) gas engine though so it cost me $10 just to start it up. Yeah, diesels pull great, but the maintenance is a killer. My uncle says it costs him a c-note every time he has the oil changed, although I don't think the 7.3Ls took 4 gallons of oil to fill them up, but I could be wrong about that.

Edit: please note that this is someone accustomed to pulling heavy shit with an F250 with a tuned-up Powerstroke that was impressed by the power of the Dodge 1500 Eco-diesel. So take that as you will.

I will walk before I ever drive a dodge. I’ve had ford toyota Suzuki Honda chevy and Nissan. It will never own a Chrysler product. Complete shit. Except the 3500s with the Cummins. But don’t like dodges style so that will never happen either. Haha.

My dad had a 2013 cummins 2500 that would pull the hinges off the gates of hell. You are talking 900ish ft lbs. I’ve had a duramax and a 7.3 and it would out work both.

We towed my tacoma after it got stolen from Okeechobee on a huge trailer to Todd’s, so probably somewhere around 9500 lbs and we averaged 17 miles the the gallon.

The maintenance cost may deter some but you’re doing oil changes every ~10k miles, everything is heavy duty, last longer.

There isn’t really much a gasoline truck can do that a diesel can’t do better except the payment.

And also except much of the Jeep Wrangler line. Pretty sure that's the only Chrysler product I've ever owned and I would consider owning one again if something happened to the OGT...probably a TJ though.

I was raised in a Chevy household (rebuilt my first SBC at 14), but I've owned almost as many FCA products as I have GM. I had zero real issues with any of them.

The problem with pulling Frank's truck for me was mainly from the fact that I couldn't position his truck far enough back on the trailer for my liking (those stupid ass swing-up ramps prevented it from happening). Oh, and driving through Tampa and down i-4 during Friday rush hour didn't help my experience either.

For only doing about 2 out of state trips a year, gas was a no brainer for me. The Ford tows my setup just fine (weight distributing hitch and trailer brakes on both axles are the tickets to success).

I had the same thoughts on my uncle's trailer when I used it to drag the OGT to your house. I did noticed that it pulled a lot smoother on the way home because the ramps were touching the rear bumper instead of just barely clearing it, haha. Definitely need slide out ramps, or at least ones that you can just hook on the end of the trailer.
