I used to be really into biking but have been out of it for several years. Just picked this up a couple weeks ago and loving it.

Yes, I did ride my bike through a smokey casino last weekend! Fears, Tears, and Beers 2018 was a blast. Came in 9th for my cat out of 13. Beat spot 10 by just over 2 minutes on 3 stages! It was the polka dots for sure. Looking forward to going back next year!

Second photo was on a segment called "the whoops". Its was fun as all hell. Like a 1000 mph 1.5 mile pump track.

1x For racing is perfect. Really limits the chances of a dropped chain. I have 3 CX bikes, 2 race, 1 training/gravel-ish (35+ tires) that i whip around mtb trails with. All setup with Sram CX1. Race rigs are 40x11-28 and my gravel/training bike has an 11-36 cassette. I did Dirty Kanza (200 mile gravel race w/ 14,000' of climbing) with the 40 x 11-36 and it was fine. Giant has a few really affordable 1x disc builds, they offer the best bang for the buck IMO.

I know it isn't really designed for it, but how do you think a 40x11-36 would do for the occasional stiff road climb/fast descent?

Around SLC, we have a few REALLY steep canyons the roadies love and I'd be interested in trying once or twice just to say I did.

Dude commuting to work is the tits, you're going to love it. Here's my rig I commute on. It's exactly what you described, a steep full carbon hardtail with rigid fork and disc brakes.

That's a beauty! I've had my Scout for over a year now. I don't see myself getting tired of it any time soon. It's so forgiving when I pick a shitty line and ridiculously fun all the time.

Nothing really beats true road gearing, but i do train a decent amount on my cx bike with road tires in the summer and i normally would like a bit more gear on the flats as i get spun out around 25mph? but for climbing i have no complaints. I had a road bike setup with 1x for crit racing and it was pretty sweet. I think i had a 50t front ring, but that was strictly for crits and flat recovery ride kind of stuff.

Yeah, after a lot of consideration of what @SquattiePippen and @1TonTomato have said, I think a fast hardtail mtb is in my future. I like the idea of a CX bike, but we only have a few races a year here in the fall, and it sounds like it would only be ok-ish as a road bike. If I'm honest, I don't seeing myself donning lycra anyways.

Doesn't help that a lot of Utah drivers (like everywhere else) are very anti-roadie.

Use this opportunity to get a slacked out hardtail and commute on it! It would be way more comfortable and more importantly an excuse for another MTB

OK folks, I have 2 bikes I am considering for my new commuter/XC hardtail extravaganza. Thoughts?

2013 Stumpjumper hardtail vs 2013 Cannondale Lefty.

Stumpy: Carbon, standard fork, 1x10, flat pedals, nothing proprietary. 71.5* HTA
    [IMG]

Lefty: Carbon, 2x10, Stans wheels (better), Clipless pedals (I ride flats, but want to try clips), Lefty! (but also proprietary...) 71* HTA

Can you use the backup camera if you fold in the tailgate handle cover?

Yep. I do exactly that. Fold under the handle flap, and it might just barely show at the top of the camera screen.

Aw snap! Didn't you have a Norco?

DV opens this weekend too, but I'm gonna hold off until I get back from vacation to let the park mob ride themselves out first.

Yeah I did. I still have it... trying to sell it. You interested? Lol.
It’s gonna be packed at Trestle. But I’m too anxious to ride, can’t wait any longer.
