Well no one who posts on TW has bricked their truck. Mat has said there are safeguards with the flash software that mitigate this possibility.

We've seen guys freaking out because they "fucked up" or were getting errors - none have caused permanent damage AFAIK. It would be all over this site in seconds!

BTW the factory calibration for every ECU version is available from OVtune (well except maybe the very early A/T ones - 04B00, 04B01)

I’m running 1.04 87. You’ll love it compared to stock. 91 is great, but I didn’t want to foot the bill for premium.

There's 1 gas station that's only 5 min out of my way that carries 91, I think after a couple weeks I'll probably try it.

As @MOC221_ said, it hasnt happened yet and there are safeguards in place too.

For your own personal info, and anybody else reading this who doesn't know yet, you cannot screw up the factory tune. We all know what you meant, you meant the ECU, but everyone benefits from a little knowledge and you may as well understand what you're doing to your truck, no?

Flashing your ECU with a map REPLACES your currently installed map, rather than laying over it, for lack of better words, or modifying it. You cannot screw up the factory tune because you are not editing it. It is being replaced.

I did have a temporary issue. If you're unable to complete the flash, the truck may be dead until you're able to flash correctly.

If a flash fails for any reason, restart the process and flash again.

Ecu is protected. You could unplug the battery and OBDII cable mid flash and still recover it by flashing again.

I didn't really notice any of these concerns/issues with a stock truck/tune until I began reading these posts and now I understand the "dead pedal" and lack of power in lower rpm's. I barely ever drive in D, only in S and the last day or so I have been purposely driving in D so I can determine if I have the same issues others have reported. I still haven't noticed any hunting for gears as I haven't been on the freeway much so of course now the more I read and notice things the more I wonder how this tune is compared to stock

I really think the erratic shifting was an issue with trucks before toyota's update. The update appears to only effect the erratic shifting. It will not change pedal feel, etc.

Question on this note in the blog: expanding the limit of throttle angle in 6th (stock tune will not let you go over 25-30% throttle in 6th...no matter what

Under what circumstance would you want say 50% or even 100% throttle in 6th? Wouldn't a high accel pedal angle, high wheel speed, high load request specify a down shift above that 25% throttle. Basically you're telling the truck you need to accelerate, and this motor just doesn't have the torque to really do anything in 6th anyway. So you're just bogging and going no where.

I guess my question is why is that a bad thing?

Yes, this happened to me. I noticed I was flashing the ECU with the TCU file so I canceled the process. Truck wouldn't start. Flashed again with the correct file and she started right up.

Yo, I'm seeing that the TACTRIX wireless fob is like 169 bucks? I'm no longer seeing an actual "cable" on their website. Could somebody point me in the right direction? I'm pretty close to pulling the trigger on this tune.

The one you are looking at is the correct one. Its "known" as a OBDII cable.

I wouldn't even think this was possible because when you order the tune you have to specify year range/transmission type... interesting.

Thanks for the quick reply. I just wanted to double check that there wasn't a corded option for a little less cash, but thats not really a big deal.

Edit: Looks like this one is actually corded. 169+Shipping, ouch! Oh well.

Been dealing with factory tune for 43k miles. I'm ready to see what this OV Tune is cracked up to be.

This has probably been covered but a search wasn't getting me what I was looking for. Does flashing the ECU impact the warranty? I assume it would and that Toyota could tell but I will admit that I am pretty ignorant when it comes to flashing the ECU. TIA!

The answer appears to be no - Toyota won't be able to really tell and doesn't affect warranty from what I have read
