    hi friends

What’s the weight capacity you can put on an open tailgate?

Any fixes for whistling from wind going between side mirror and truck at speeds over 40mph? Driving me loco (I believe that means crazy).

    Much love

Windows down. Can't really hear it when they're up but I like to let the fresh air run through my thinning hair.

I'm unaware of any official rating, but it's more than two fat guys and a medium-sized dog plus a 6-pack of beer.

Thanks. I just read a few stories of people's tailgates bending and wondered if using it to climb in and out of bed would cause some permanent bend. Paranoid.

I'm sure it's possible to bend it, but I don't think it's that easy.

I had read that, too, but when I put my hand between the mirror and door it seems to stop the noise.

Yeah its at a specific speed right?? Like about 40mph on a calm day. Doens't happen very much but annoying when it does. Don't drive that exact speed and you're good.

Mine went away ... used to do it first year I got the truck. Haven't herd it in a while.

Get a steel tailgate skin. I got this one is from Mobtown. I climb in and out of the bed on a regular basis.

Never a stpid question, but if there is we get to have a awesome "TW Friday" thread :headbang:.

1.) Don't knw the exact answer, but I ~185lbs - have stepped / sat on it MANY time without issue. My wifey & I have sat on it enjoying a cool drink. I have no issues and belive it can take a lot more weight than us.
2.) I do not have a whistle here or never noticed it

I’ve really only heard of bending tailgates if you have something heavy and not tied down that rolls back and smashes the tailgate (like a dirt bike). If you’re really paranoid a few companies make tailgate reinforcements (like @rnish above)
As for the wind noise, window visors is all I can recommend.

Some questions are dumb. For example: Why don't they make mouse flavored cat food?

There is no official weight rating for the tailgate because it is not intended to be load bearing. Officially the rating would be 0 lbs from Toyota. This is why it can and should be removed when loading/unloading heavy stuff.

I drove a DR walk behind brush mower on the tailgate and it didn't even care. That beast is like 500 lbs.

If i had to make a guess, i would say the bending tailgates are more based on the area that the pressure is being applied. two fat people sitting on a tailgate has the weight distributed even across the tailgate, but if one fat guy is carrying the other, while stepping onto the tailgate, well then all the pressure is on one spot of the tailgate and it is more likely to bend. also if you climb in and out closer to the edges, where there is added support, it will be less likely to bend there also

I still think that bent tailgates on tacomas are caused the same way as bent tailgates are caused on any other truck - unsecured cargo rolling back and smacking the shit out of them.

Of course I do. I won't even stand on it because I know it's gonna break if I do.

OK, the questions would then be:
What is defined as "heavy stuff"?
Up to what point can you safely leave the tailgate on?
At what point should you take the tailgate off?
